FAQs
What is my NetID account used for?
When the transition to NetID as a universal login is complete, the NetID account will be used to authenticate users to most IT applications and services. Technically, the NetID is the account ID for Active Directory. As examples, the NetID will be the login credential for the WKU Portal, Ecourses, Email, etc.
What is LDAP?
LDAP stands for Lighweight Directory Access Protocol. It is basically a directory service used to store authentication credentials. Many internet and web based applications authenticate to LDAP. At WKU, we use LDAP to authenticate email and other applications.
What is the difference in my LDAP account and my Email account?
Your LDAP account and your Email account are essentially the same. Your LDAP account ID and your Email account ID are the same even though they are actually stored separately in their respective systems.
Why do I have so many accounts at WKU?
Historically, in most IT environments, each individual application and/or system used or required a separate userid account and password. At WKU, we want to move toward a single sign-on environment (WKU Portal) and universal login credentials (Active Directory NetID Account). This will alleviate some of the complexities of mulitple user accounts and if managed properly, will actually be more secure.
