Queen Of Jordan, WKU Officials To Dedicate Yarmouk FM

Bowling Green, Ky. - On Feb. 18, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan will open Yarmouk FM, the nation’s first student-oriented radio station developed in a partnership between Yarmouk University and the International Journalism and Media Management Training (IJMMT) program at Western Kentucky University.

Yarmouk FM students will broadcast a live interview with the Queen during the event. Attending from WKU will be Dr. Barbara Burch, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, and Jerry Barnaby, IJMMT program manager.

The IJMMT, a partnership between WKU and Internews Network, helps strengthen the capacity of local journalism to report on issues of interest and importance.

Yarmouk University and the IJMMT have been collaborating since 2005 and built Yarmouk FM to give students hands-on experience in journalism. Broadcasting from the campus located in Irbid in northern Jordan, the station commenced broadcasting on Sept. 17, 2006. 

The IJMMT is a program managed by WKU’s Department of Educational Telecommunications. This current program is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor.

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) recognized the collaborative possibilities of WKU and Internews (www.internews.org) and was instrumental in bringing the partners together and in the continuing support for this program.
