Western Kentucky University, in partnership with Internews Network, operate the IJMMT as a means to strength the capacity local journalism to report on issues of interest and importance, in creating the opportunities to access local information vital to democratic principles and civil society, and to improve the quality of journalism study.
Over the past year, Internews Network and WKU created the first Youth Radio Production Unit in Jordan at the Princess Basma Youth Resource Center in Amman, and built the first ever student run community radio station at Yarmouk University in Irbid, located in northern Jordan. This project has been very successful, largely owing to the strong partnership between Internews Network and WKU. Within this partnership, WKU provides technical support, world-class media educators, and unmatched training facilities, all set against the backdrop of the diverse and supportive city of Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Due to the success of the current program in Jordan that supports access to information, freedom of expression and community interaction on civil society issues, Internews Network and WKU are keen on enhancing and deepening this effort by expanding to other communities and having new voices heard within all parts of Jordan.
The project is currently operating through June 2008 and is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and labor with support from Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY). Senator McConnell recognized the collaborative possibilities of WKU and Internews and was instrumental in bringing the partners together and in the continuing support fo this program.
