WKU & Internews Partner with Egyptians Press Institute

Bowling Green, Ky. – Western Kentucky University and Internews® Networks will partner with the Al-Ahram Regional Press Institute (ARPI) to kick off the third year of the International Journalism and Media Management Training Program at Western Kentucky University.  ARPI joins the collaboration among Western Kentucky University’s Public Broadcasting, Western’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting, and Internews, an international non-profit organization that supports open media worldwide.

ARPI will work with the WKU/Internews program staff to select the 50 Egyptian print journalists to participate in the training.  The selections will take place in Cairo in early September.  The first set of 18 to 20 Egyptian journalists will arrive in mid-October for the inaugural 8-week training session.  The second and third US-based sessions will take place in the spring of 2004.  Simultaneously, a WKU curriculum developer will work with an Egyptian counterpart to develop a pilot journalism curriculum for Egyptian universities.  In the summer of 2004, WKU/Internews trainers will complete a training and assessment in Egypt.

This 15-month phase is funded by a $1.3 million grant from the United States Agency for International Development with support from Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY).  McConnell recognized the collaborative possibilities of Western and Internews and was instrumental in bringing the partners together and in the continuing support for this program.  To date, the International Journalism and Media Management Training Program has received $3.3 million from USAID.
