Join Registered Dietitan, Sharon Barren as she covers vegetarian/vegan information along with the different types of vegans, what those different types include, and nutrition considerations for such food plans along with the reasons why people go to a vegetarian diet.
There are six different types of vegetarians; total vegetarians, vegans, lacto-vegetarians, lacto-ovo-vegetarians, pesco-vegetarians, and pollo-vegetarians. These types of vegetarians may sound like rocket science, but the type of diet is in the word itself.
Total vegetarians eat only plant food, meaning they do not eat any animal foods, including fish, eggs, dairy products, and honey. Similar to total vegetarians, vegans omit all animal products from their diets they take it a step further and eliminate them from all aspects of their life; vegans use nothing from animals such as leather, wool, and silk. Lacto-vegetarians include dairy products along with their diet of plant food while lacto-ovo vegetarians eat both eggs and dairy products. Lastly, pesco-vegetarians include fish into their diets while pollo-vegetarians eat poultry, such as chicken and duck.
After being diagnosed with prostate cancer, men who eat a diet high in vegetable fats, such as those in nuts and olive oil, may be less likely to have their disease spread, a new study suggests.
