If you are planning to travel abroad WKU Health Services currently provides many of the vaccines needed by the international traveler. Health Services follows the CDC recommendations for international travel.
A visit for travel medication involves a detailed medical history and a brief physical exam. Unfortunately, this service is not covered by many insurance companies.
After the evaluation the provider will recommend certain vaccines and medication to decrease your risk of getting ill when you travel. These recommendations are dependent upon where you are traveling, how long you will be outside the country, and what you will be doing during the trip.
Travel to most areas of Western Europe will require nothing more than confirmation of routine vaccines and giving boosters if needed. Travel to Central and South America, far East Asia and Africa which will generally require additional vaccines.
In-Stock Vaccines (we can administer):
- Tetanus (with diphtheria and pertussis) vaccine
- Polio vaccine
- Meningitis- indicated for travel to certain parts of Africa - (and currently recommended for all college students)
- Hepatitis A and B vaccines- or combination
- MMR (Mumps, Measles, Rubella)
Unavailable Vaccines (we can prescribe and administer):
- Japanese encephalitis vaccine
- Rabies- (However current world wide shortage for pre-exposure vaccine)
At this time the only local provider of the Yellow Fever vaccine is Dr Rebecca Shadowen. Feel free to contact her office at (270)746-0440. Our providers can prescribe medications that are needed for prevention of Malaria and medications to carry with you in case of certain illnesses and symptoms. They will also review preventative measures with you. This includes everything from accident prevention to insect bite protection as recommended by the CDC.
Now that you have the details about traveling abroad, please call us at (270) 745-5641 to schedule your appointment!!
