What is TopperWell/SHAC?

TopperWell/SHAC members serve as peer health educators and a student health advisory committee.  Members work together to promote wellness by increasing awareness of student health issues and encouraging positive lifestyle choices and decision-making skills through peer education.  Members also advise on WKU Health Services' policies, patient procedures, and review surveys and patient satisfaction.

What are the responsibilities of a TopperWell member?
  • Attend Peer Health Educator Training (Fall & Spring Semesters as deemed by advisor)
  • Attend weekly meetings (Date/Time will be determined each semester)
  • Attend monthly meetings on health advisory issues (part of 1 weekly meeting)
  • Develop, promote, and present health education programs and activities on campus.
  • Serve as a health education resource to WKU students.
  • Complete assignments as directed
  • Assist in evaluation of health education programs, presentations and activities.
  • Help recruit future TopperWell/SHAC members throughout the academic year.
Why should I apply to become a TopperWell?
  • Gain professional work experience -build your resume
  • Develop communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Can take the Peer Health Education Class (PH 382) for 3 hour class credit.
  • Receive certification and training as a Peer Educator.  Become a Certified Peer Educator (CPE).
  • Increase public speaking and promotion skills.
  • Gain knowledge in several areas of health and wellness (ex: stress management, HIV/AIDS, STI's, alcohol, sleep, tobacco, etc.).
  • Meet new people, make new friends!
How much will it take to be a TopperWell?

A member must commit to work for the duration of at least one academic year. Members will be required to attend peer education trainings in early fall and spring semesters as well as attend weekly meetings. Members need to present at least one presentation per semester on campus.  Additional time commitment is based on projects members are involved with.
