Injuries and acute health issues

Sports Medicine

Sports medicine visits are for anyone who is physically active. Providers are available to treat injuries, and refer patients to a specialist if needed.

Health Counseling

Painful feelings such as anxiety, anger, depression, low self-esteem or tension are a normal part of being human and can affect anyone. These feelings are often temporary and can be eased by rest, relaxation, exercise, good nutrition, and support from trusted friends. At other times, stressors such as a heavy work load, relationships, or past family experiences are unmanageable and overwhelming. If this occurs you may want to seek professional help. WKU Health Services works closely with Counseling and Testing Services to provide both medical and psychological treatment.

Immunizations

It is important (even as an adult) to keep immunizations up-to-date (e.g. Flu, Tetanus, etc.). People are more prone to certain illnesses while living in the close quarters of a college setting. Included among these illnesses is meningitis. It is recommended by the American College Health Association (ACHA) that any student living in a dormitory/residence hall or in close quarters with other students receive the meningitis vaccine called Menactra. Health Services has the meningitis vaccine. Other vaccines are also available.

Laboratory Tests

These include a variety of tests ordered by a physician or nurse practitioner. Tests that are performed on-site include strep, mono, flu, urine and serum pregnancy, urinalysis, and microscopic examinations of various body fluids and skin scrapings. Health Services is affiliated with Quest Diagnostics as our reference laboratory. Virtually any test ordered can be performed through Quest Diagnostics. Turn-around time for these send-out tests is generally one to five days. Phlebotomy and other services are available for orders brought or faxed from outside doctors. Results are faxed to the ordering physician.

Drug Screenings

WKU Health Services collects chain-of-custody 5-panel screens (drugs of abuse) and 10-panel screens (drugs of abuse and misuse). Drugs are tested to the cut-off level that the DOT requires. A 10-panel screen + alcohol is also available. For further information, please contact us.

Lung Function Testing

Tests that measure breathing capacity and other pulmonary functions are available for screening and diagnostic purposes.

EKG

An electrocardiogram, which measures the electrical activity of the heart, is available for diagnostic purposes.

Contraceptives

Condoms are available free of charge. Oral contraceptives and Depo-Provera injections (you provide the medication), are available by prescription after an office visit.
