Earth Days Celebrations at WKU and in the Community: |

· 04/27/07 (Fri)—WKU Earth Days Festival! 11:30am-7:30pm, South Lawn, WKU campus. This is a festival to celebrate and learn about the Earth! Throughout the day we will have speakers, bands, booths, movies, and events all for the enjoyment and education of our guests. Everyone is encouraged to stop by and enjoy this great event! Music by Mark Walker, Josh Beasley Trio, Mr. Dink, Eric Wilson and the Empty Hearts/Kyte, Jordan Pendley. Speakers include Bonfire McDonald, Wes Berry (WKU English Dept.), Lydia Nelson (National Champion Forensics Speaker), and Mel Messer, WKU Forensics Team. Booths: Greentoppers Students for Campus Sustainability; Energy Star Light Bulb Exchange, Starbuck’s Coffee, The Humane Society, The Nutrition Center, BG Green, Lost River Cave and Valley, Wild Bird and Nature Store, WKU Horticulture Club, WKU Parking and Transportation, Bowling Green Public Transit / Community Action of Southern Kentucky, Keep It Clean Bowling Green, Mug Shots, Java City, STAND, SIFE—Students in Free Enterprise, Tennessee Valley Authority, Solar Energy. Other Attractions: Gary Force Honda Hybrid, Taylor Weatherford’s vegetable oil car, John Guitzeit's Smoothie Bike, Hackey-Sack Tournament, Photography Contest, Greentoppers T-shirt and bake sale. Donations from: Shutterbug, Barnes and Noble, Bread and Bagels, WKU Art Department, Bev’s Studio and Gallery, Amazing Grace Whole Food and Nutrition, Bob Reuff Signs, WKU Center for Environmental Education, and an anonymous individual. Contact james.coby@wku.edu if you’d like to host an activity or booth, help coordinate, or serve as a sponsor. Photography Contest—featuring images showing anything that is positive to the environment or any human action that shows conservation. Submit photos at the festival from 11:00-12:30 on South Lawn; there will be signs. Winners will be announced later that day. Two categories: Action and Still. Size: 8x10 inches, no framing or matting. Put your name, phone, and email on back of your picture. No post-editing, please: raw photos only. Contact sara.ferguson422@wku.edu with any questions. · 04/28/2007 (Sat)—Upper Green River Watershed Watch Training. Want to find out what shape our streams are in? Training for current and new citizen volunteers to assess stream habitat and biota, with sampling to take place May 18-20. Program details at http://kywater.org/watch/ . · 05/01/2007 (Tues)—Bicyclists in support of a Bicycle-Friendly Community to City Hall, 4-6pm. The Bowling Green League of Bicyclists is asking the mayor and city commissioners to support Bowling Green’s transition to a Bicycle Friendly Community (see http://www.bglob.com/bfc.php) and they’d love your support. · 05/18/2007 (Fri)– National (and Local) Bike to Work Day. A welcome event for bicyclists, with refreshments, companionship, will be held 7-9am in Fountain Square Park. Sponsored by the Bowling Green League of Bicyclists (http://www.bglob.com). Contact Sara Shipley Hiles(saraship@gmail.com) for more details. May is National Bicycling Month!
· 06/02/2007 (Sat)—Barren River Cleanup. Volunteers are needed to participate in cleanup of a 3-mile stretch of the Barren River, from River Walk at Mitch McConnell Park (College St.) to Beech Bend Park, working both from land and from canoe. Sponsored by Green River Basin Team and WKU Upper Green River Biological Preserve. Meet at 10am at the College Street pedestrian bridge.
