 Dr. Beverly Trail

October 10, 2012

Join The Center for Gifted Studies for this free one-day seminar made possible by the generosity of the Arts Education Task Force – Twice Exceptional Foundation. This year's seminar leader is Dr. Beverly A. Trail, the National Association for Gifted Children's Special Population Network Chair. She is a twice-exceptional consultant, trainer, researcher, and frequent presenter at the National Association for Gifted Children and Council for Exceptional Children Conventions. She outlines the focus of her seminar below:

Maximizing Outcomes for Twice-Exceptional Children: What Educators and Parents Need to Understand and Be Able To Do

Twice-exceptional children possess a unique combination of characteristics that include incredible strengths and debilitating weakness. These children have the characteristics of gifted students and students with disabilities. They can appear unmotivated, defiant, and oppositional, yet they are emotionally fragile. Participants in this training will gain a better understanding of twice-exceptional gifted children. In the training, strategies from both gifted and special education will be shared that are proven effective in meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of twice-exceptional students. Specific strategies are included to assist children develop skills in executive functioning, processing speed, fluency, critical thinking, and creative problem solving. In addition, social and emotional development is supported by strategies to help students in dealing with dysfunctional perfectionism, interpersonal relationships, and intrapersonal understanding. Finally, participants will learn how to develop a comprehensive plan using Response-to-intervention (RtI) approach that will address diverse needs and improve outcomes for twice-exceptional gifted children.
