Topics That Matter

Parent Seminar

The Center offers many seminars for parents prior to and during our programs for students. We believe education is strongest when parents, educators, and students work as a team. In keeping with this philosophy, we invite parents of students participating in our Super Saturdays program to attend seminars on gifted children and their educational needs. Our most recent series — conducted during Winter Super Saturdays 2012 — concluded February 11, but you can view some of the presentations given here.

Winter 2012 Super Saturdays Parent Seminars

Tracy Inman Underachievement  Dr. Tracy Inman, associate
director of The Center for Gifted
  Studies, gave parents an in-depth
look an issue facing gifted children
  who are not appropriately
  encouraged and challenged —
  underachievement. "If during the
first five or six years of school, a child earns good grades and high praise without having to make much effort, what are all the things he doesn’t learn that most children learn by third grade?"

Julia Roberts Opportunities  Dr. Julia Link Roberts,
  executive director of The
  Center for Gifted Studies and
  The Carol Martin Gatton
  Academy of Mathematics and
  Science
, gave an
  "Opportunities Galore"
  presentation exploring the
possibilities open to gifted students through The Center and The Gatton Academy.

Previous Seminars

The following is an example, a parent seminar that preceded Super Saturdays in 2010.

Parent Super Saturday Seminar – 1

“Heat up the levels of challenge in the classrooms, and see who bubbles up.”
— Educator Bertie Kingore

Dr. Janet Lynne Tassel focused on documenting observed gifts in children and understanding why it is important to identify giftedness. She shared suggestions with parents to help nurture talent at home, and to be an advocate for their child. Without early identification, Dr. Tassel told parents that a child’s potential skills might deteriorate and parents and educators could begin to see a pattern of low performance, boredom and possibly even depression and behavioral issues in a child. However, early identification of strengths and giftedness can help a child develop confidence and self-esteem and encourage children to enjoy learning.
