Guild
I actually got involved with the Guild back in 2002. I was looking around for a place to sell some chainmaile, stopped by the Guild, started playing All Flesh Must Be Eaten, and haven't really missed a meeting since.
Back in high school I got together with a few of my friends and tried to get a Dungeons and Dragons game going. None of us had ever played and we spent a few days trying to figure out why the game didn't come with a board and eventually managed to play out a one shot. This was back in the awful 2nd edition days when Thac0 was king. To make a long story short with only three of us interested and no experience and no local gaming shop our second game was our last, and my Players Handbook collected dust for the next four years.
When I played All Flesh with Jody Denton on that faithful day I finally had everything I needed. An interested group, knowledgeable people, a place and time to play, and an experienced GM who knew how to make things fun. I wonder how many people out there were like me when I first walked into the Guild. How many people out there are interested in Dungeons and Dragons but don't know anything about it, or can't find a DM or other players? The Guild is the place for those people and if they are lucky they will stumble into the Downing University Center and see our flag flying or come across this website.
But anyway, back to my life in the Guild. When I first found the Guild I was just starting my Sophomore year. I was in the SGA around that time and knew that the Guild had not been applying for organization aid in the past. I figured that the Guild was more deserving than any other campus group. So I got on the phone with the IRS (it's actually sort of fun to talk to them) and got a Non Profit Tax ID Number. I applied for organizational aid in the name of the guild, got awarded $350 and the next thing I know I've been nominated for Assistant Guildmaster.
I've held many positions in the guild over the past few years. I've been in every position but Secretary come to think of it. My current position is that of Loremaster (read webmaster). The Guild has had a sort of hit or miss website in the past and I'm doing my best to change that. In fact, this whole blog about me is in fact a test of a system to make sure it's working. Never do anything for only one reason right? I hope to make this website a viable gaming hub. I want this website to be a place people everywhere can visit to get information, read stories, and just generally wish they were here with us in person.
If your at all interested in what I like this next bit is for you. My major gaming interest is and always shall be Dungeons & Dragons. Don't get me wrong, I love to play Magic, All Flesh, Gurps games, etc. But Dungeons & Dragons will likely always be my favorite past time. I really like the high adventure games and you can almost always find me playing a caster type. I've killed more people with well timed cantrips than most players off with their long swords. Check out some of my stories here on the website if your interested.
When I'm not playing in the Guild you can usually find me in front of a computer somewhere programming. I'm a computer scientist by degree and a programmer by temperament. I'm currently employed as an Application Programmer at Holley Performance Products right here in Bowling Green. I'm a fine programmer if I do say so myself. I took 1st place here at Western in the programming competition and went on to take 2nd place in the ACM regionals. I find that there is some similarity to programming and playing a spell slinging wizard. Come to western and major in C.S. and you'll know what I mean.
The Guild is really growing now. Our membership has doubled in the last year, our events on campus are really starting to come together. We have some interesting partnerships with other campus groups and we are starting to actively recruit. We are putting on our first Con this year and its going to be a great hit. It may sound clich? but its the truth: In just five years the Guild has gone from a handful of people with a common interest to a known group on this campus and in the gaming community. I'm very excited to be a part of the Guild at this time. I feel privileged.
