A heightened interest in corporate governance and financial reporting has created an exciting and challenging climate for the accounting profession. The performance of WKU accounting graduates on the CPA Exam consistently compares favorably with the performance of accounting graduates from our peer, aspirational, and competitor schools, and is above the national average. The CPA pass rate data are consistent with data for other years and show that our graduates perform as well or better than the graduates from our peer schools. Additional evidence of the success of our graduates on the CPA Exam, ?? Cornwell, a ??? WKU accounting alumnus was awarded two Awards of Excellence for outstanding achievement on the exam. He stated, “My success on the exam was due primarily to the solid accounting education provided by WKU, the study ethics taught by the accounting department, and the support of my knowledgeable professors who were always willing to help. My decision to attend WKU for my undergraduate degree in Accounting was the best decision I could have made.” Accounting is an expanding profession, and the demand for accountants is strong. Opportunities exist in the accounting profession for students with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and interests. The attributes that an individual must demonstrate in order to achieve success in accounting include the desire to participate in a career of professional service through the fullest application of one's talent; the ability to develop the analytical thought process necessary to resolve conceptual problems of the type faced by practicing accountants; the technical ability to work with data in the preparation of financial reports; and the willingness to strive for a personality which allows one to work with and direct the work of others. Accountants must go beyond the numbers and become proficient in communications and interpersonal relations.
