STUDY ABROAD SCHEDULE

Confirmed dates for the 2007 Program are January 3 through January 18, 2007.

January 3, 2007 (wed)-- Meet at Nashville Airport at 2:00 pm CDT at the Northwest Airlines check-in counter (allow time for possible traffic delays in Nashville). Northwest #1738 Nashville to Detroit (3:45pm/6:20 pm)
Dinner in Detroit Airport. Northwest #32 to London (Gatwick), departs Detroit at 9:20 pm
January 4, 2007 (thur) -- Arrive London Gatwick Airport 10:00 am. Transfer by rail and subway to hotel acommodations (Hotel California). This Bed & Breakfast hotel is located near Kings Cross subway and is a comfortable place (Phone: 011-44-20-7837-7629). Students will share quads, triples, and twin rooms. Rest of day free to acclimatize.
January 5, 2007 (fri) -- Highlights of London's cultural landscapes (by subway/rail/bus). Overnight Hotel California.
January 6, 2007 (sat) -- Development in the Eastern Corridor - Isle of Dogs, Olympic Village, Greenwich, and the lower Thames (by train/subway). Overnight Hotel California.
January 7, 2007 (sun) -- London's Green Belt, bedroom communities, Oxford, and the Thames Corridor (by train). Examine the issue of acid rain and limestone damage in thhe Oxford monuments. Overnight Hotel California.
January 8, 2007 (mon) -- Explore London's urban governance structures - We will meet officials from the City of London at the government complex near the River Thames at 2 pm for a two-hour conference on planning in London. At 5:30 pm, we will convene at Café Emm in Soho for a pre-theatre dinner. After dinner, walk to the Dominion Theatre (Tottenham Court Road subway station)for an evening performance of We Will Rock You, which begins at 7:30 pm and ends at 10 pm. Overnight at Hotel California.
January 9, 2007 (tues) -- We depart the hotel at 11 am for the rail transfer to Brussels, Belgium, via the Eurostar High-speed train through the Channel Tunnel. Departing London Waterloo station at 12:40 pm and arriving Brussels station around 4 pm European time. Overnight at the Ustel Hotel, Brussels (Phone: 011-32-2-520-6053.
January 10, 2007 (wed) -- The European Union and its impact on the Brussels urban infrastructure. Planning for a regional economy. Overnight Ustel Hotel.
January 11, 2007 (thurs) -- Visit Brugges, the Venice of the North. Development planning in a historical context (by train and walking). Overnight at Ustel Hotel.
January 12, 2007 (fri) -- Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and the Rhine Delta corridor. Urban Planning in a regional context (by train). Overnight Ustel Hotel.
January 13, 2007 (sat) -- Depart the hotel at 10:45am and transfer to Paris, France, by Thalys High-Speed train. This train departs Brussels at 11:40am and arrives at Paris Nord station at 1:05 pm. Transfer to the Excelsior Hotel by Paris metro. Free afternoon and evening. Overnight Excelsior Hotel. (Phone: 011-33-1-4634-7950)
January 14, 2007 (sun) -- The Paris of Georges Haussmann - urban planning on a grand scale (by subway). Overnight at Hotel.
January 15, 2007 (mon) -- UNESCO, the EU, and the role of Paris in regional planning and development (subway). Overnight at Excelsior Hotel.
January 16, 2007 (tues) -- Versailles, La Defense, and peripheral Paris (train and subway). Overnight at Excelsior Hotel.
January 17, 2007 (wed) -- Suburban Paris - new futures for old problems in urban leadership (by rail and subway). Overnight in Excelsior Hotel.
January 18, 2007 (thur) -- Depart Hotel at 10 am for RER rail transfer to CDG airport. Return to the U.S. via Paris (CDG) and Detroit (Northwest #49 departs 1:55 pm and arrives Detroit at 5:05 pm. Northwest #1741 departs Detroit at 7 pm). Arrive in Nashville approximately 7:41 pm. Collect baggage and program officially ends.

GEOG 475 -- Leadership in Urban Geography (3 credit hours):
Analysis of the leadership strategies in designing, implementing, and constructing urban environments. An emphasis on the cultural and physical landscapes of the three cities visited. Topics included cultural frameworks, transportation and tourism, environmental challenges, resources and urban impacts, regional imbalances, physical landscapes, and the impacts of globalization.
Professor: Debbie Kreitzer.

LEAD 475 -- Leadership in Urban Planning (3 credit hours, can be used for the Leadership Studies Certificate):
Analysis of the leadership strategies in designing, implementing, and constructing urban environments. An emphasis on the cultural and physical landscapes of the three cities visited. Topics included cultural frameworks, transportation and tourism, environmental challenges, resources and urban impacts, regional imbalances, physical landscapes, and the impacts of globalization.
