Journal will be published annually.
Instructions for Students:
Congratulations: Your research paper has been recommended by your professor for inclusion in the 2000 inaugural volume of the
Pennyroyal Papers. This is a publication of the Department of Geography and Geology and it aims to showcase the quality of
student research in the geosciences here at Western Kentucky University. You can be justifiably proud that your paper has been selected for
publication and we encourage you to add this honor to your resume and the publication to your portfolio.
The following instructions will help you to prepare your paper for publication. First, finish any basic editing changes suggested by
your professor. Second, format your paper according to these requirements:
(A) Your paper should have a title (all upper case), your name, and the name of the sponsoring professor center justified at the top of the
first page.
(B) The text should be single-spaced, left unjustified (ragged right margins), with 1" margins all around, and should be formatted in 12 CPI
font (Times Roman or Courier). Pages should be unnumbered. Do not use any proportional fonts, special embedded characters, or endnote
programs.
(C) The paper should be divided into five major sections (you can add additional subheadings if you like, left justified), each with a
section heading (left justified), with two full spaces before the section heading. These sections should be: (1) Introduction, (2) Background
and/or Literature Review, (3) Analysis, (4) Conclusion or Summary, and (5) Bibliography.
(D) All citations MUST be in the preferred Harvard Citation style (last name of author and year of publication (i.e Keeling 2000) in
parentheses (brackets) at the end of the sentence where cited). If you have a direct "quote" in the sentence, you must also add the page
number of that quote to your citation (Keeling 2000:14). The author (s) full name (surname first), year of publication, title of book or
article, title of journal, volume number and/or edition of the book or journal, and the page numbers of the complete article should be listed
alphabetically in the bibliography section. Talk to your professor or to Dr. Keeling if you have questions about these requirements.
(E) All graphs, maps, and other illustrations should be submitted in black and white only on separate pages (landscape or portrait, depending
on the dimensions of the graphic), and each graphic should also be scanned and saved on a disk as a .jpeg file. In the text, mark in the
location of the graphic by inserting the phase (Figure 1) (or its appropriate number) at the end of the sentence where it is first
mentioned.
Finally, save your paper on disk either in Wordperfect or Word format for IBM and submit both the disk and a printed copy of your paper to Dr.
David Keeling (EST 431) as soon as possible. Talk to Dr. Keeling if you have any questions about formatting your paper for publication.
Thank you.
