Department of Geography and Geology at Western Kentucky University

 

    Edmonson County was formed on January 12, 1825.  The county covers an area of 302 square miles and its county seat is Brownsville.  The county was named Capt. John Edmonson of Virginia.  The largest feature in the county is Mammoth Cave, which is the largest cave system in the world.  Since tourism is the major industry of the county, it has over 1,400 jobs associated with tourism and generates over $40 million dollars from tourism.
