Dr. Keeling's current instructions for
independent study:
Office: EST 304, Phone: 745-4555.
The objective of the independent study program is to provide students with the
opportunity to conduct research and pursue topics not offered in a regularly scheduled
class. Student and professor agree on a research topic or course of study and meet on
a regular basis to review and discuss student progress.
To qualify for three credits of independent study, students must commit to
investing approximately 40 hours over the course of the term (equates to about 2.5
hours weekly, which is comparable to a normal class schedule) in reading, writing, and
discussion activities, plus the normal time investment in research and review.
After agreeing on a research topic, the student will meet about every three
weeks with the professor and submit the required projects plus engage in a discussion
of the assigned material.
Meeting Schedule: To be arranged, based on the student's and professor's schedule.
Final Written Exam: Monday of exam week each semester.
Research Paper Due: Monday of exam week each semester.
The semester's grade is based on discussions (25%), projects and exams (25 percent) and
the research paper (50 percent).
The research paper must be approximately 20-25 pages in length (EXCLUDING notes,
tables, maps, and other ancillary material) for 3 hours of credit. The paper must show evidence of serious
research and analysis on a topic of interest to the student. The paper must conform to
the standard requirements for research papers (i.e. quality of writing, rules of
plagiarism, format, etc.).
If you have further questions, please talk to your advisor immediately.
Happy researching!
