ASSIGNMENT 6 Instructions
Assigned: October 16, 2006.
Due: In class Wednesday October 25, 2006.
For Part One of the sixth assignment, a revised draft of your research proposal should be submitted, based on the feedback received from previous drafts. ATTACH THIS SIXTH VERSION TO THE FIFTH REVISION (the one with all the green ink on it!!).
(a) Revise the purpose and context section based on feedback from the previous draft;
(b) Refine the research question and hypothesis, where necessary;
(c) Strengthen the literature review by demonstrating a thorough understanding of key research that shapes your research proposal;
(d) revise the methodology section that outlines HOW you will test your working hypothesis.
The submitted sixth draft should be a minimum of 6-7 pages in length, with one-inch margins all around, normal 12CPI font, page numbers, have a detailed bibliography supporting the research ideas, be spell-checked and proof-read carefully, and be properly subheaded.
For Part Two of the sixth assignment, read and critique the following article:
This assignment addresses the issue of globalization and its impact on developing regions and people.
ARTICLE by Keeling, David J. (2004) "Latin American Development and the Globalization Imperative: New Directions, Familiar Crises," Journal of Latin American Geography, Vol. 3 (1), pp. 1-21;
ASSIGNMENT: After reading the article, prepare a 3-page analysis and critique (typed, one-inch margins all around, double-spaced, 12 CPI font Times Roman, numbered pages, with the article cited correctly in a bibliography at the end of the paper - doesn't need to be on a separate page) of the article's content, theory, and presentation.
Address the following issues:
(a) How did the approach of this article differ from Lewis' article and from the Kingston et al. article? On what existing concept or theory did the author base the analysis?
(b) How did the author use the literature review process to support the arguments? What other heuristic devices were used?
(c) What was the key "so what" rationale that drives this article? Did the author make a convincing "scientific" analysis to support the interpretation?
(d) What did YOU think of the article, its presentation, and findings? Were any biases or persuasive elements evident in the article?
(e) What do YOU think the article suggests about the challenges ahead for geoscientists in addressing the challenges of globalization?
Submit a 3-4 pp. paper (1" margins all around, 12 CPI Font Arial, double-spaced, page numbers, bibliography).
