Geoscience Literacy

Module One -- Becoming Familiar with the Geoscience Literature

ASSIGNMENT 1 Instructions

Assigned:  August 28, 2006.
Due:  In class Wednesday September 6, 2006.

        For the first part of this assignment, I want you to search the Geoscience literature from the past ten years and begin building a bibliography that is appropriate for your general field of study. The articles and books that you choose should be academic in nature. You should familiarize yourselve with the physical library (Helm collection and periodicals) and the virtual library (search engines, etc.).
Submit a working bibliography of at least fifteen entries. Follow the citation style used in Professional Geographer.

For the second part of this assignment, read the following article [accessible online through the WKU library:
Murphy, Alexander B. (2006) Enhancing Geography's Role in Public Debate. Annals of the Association of American Geographers 96(1):1-13. Available online or at the library.
After reading the article, prepare a 2-to-3 page analysis and critique (typed, one-inch margins all around, double-spaced, 12 CPI font Times Roman, numbered pages, with the article cited correctly in a bibliography at the end of the paper - doesn't need to be on a separate page) of the article's content, theory, and presentation.
Be prepared to discuss the main points in this article in class on Wednesday September 6, 2006.
