Folk Life Center

The Program. Western Kentucky University’s Program in Folk Studies is the largest master’s program in folklore in the United States and offers the only degree in folklore in Kentucky. Known for its innovative combination of academic and pragmatic skills training, the program has attracted students from all 50 states and a number of other countries. Graduates of the program now hold significant positions within the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, the Southern Arts Federations, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and many other museums, arts agencies, and preservation organizations. The five-member faculty has received university awards in teaching, research and public service, and includes the first WKU recipient of the Acorn Award for Kentucky State Educator of the Year.

The Log Cabin. Designed by Louisville architect Brinton B. Davis, who built many of the historic structures on WKU’s campus, the “pioneer log cabin” was constructed in the mid-1930s to commemorate and interpret Kentucky’s pioneer life. Never used for this purpose, the cabin instead housed faculty, staff and international scholars, and once served as the childhood home of film director John Carpenter. In 2004, the building was restored for use for the WKU Folklife Center and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Plans for the future include new landscaping in native plants.

The Folklife Center. Opening in fall 2004, the Center will house a number of public lectures and workshops focusing on regional folklife and history. Also planned is a series of house concerts featuring prominent local and regional musicians. The center will also serve as a home for the newly created Kentucky Folklife Society. Grant funded projects will document the folklife and cultural resources of the southeast United States.
