Farmington Historic Plantation

Devin Payne Serke

In the summer of 2013, I worked as the Programming Assistant at Farmington Historic Plantation in Louisville, Kentucky, under the supervision of the Executive Director. Throughout the summer, I worked on several events including the Evening in the Garden fundraiser in early summer, the Farmington Flea, and the fall Harvest Festival.

The objectives of my internship included the planning of events at Farmington, including those mentioned above. Secondly, I experienced the day to day operations of a non-profit historic home site with a small staff by working closely with the Executive Director. I trained as a docent to give tours of the grounds, and was even on a local educational television program that produced a special about Farmington. These experiences allowed me to better understand both the position of the Executive Director, and the skills necessary to forward the mission of an historic home site.

Farmington is a beloved piece of Louisville folklore, and I enjoyed talking about the many legends of Farmington with the guests. Between the supposed haunts that roam the rooms of the house, and the guests' childhood memories of the shaded grounds there was never a dull day at Farmington.
