CORRECTIONS
If information on your SAR is incorrect, incomplete, or missing you will need to make corrections. You may do this by correcting or adding information to the SAR, signing the SAR (both student and a parent signature is necessary for dependent students),and sending it to address listed on your SAR.
You may also make corrections on the Web. This option will allow you to make all changes except to your social security number. You may make changes to your application from the www.fafsa.edu.gov website. Choose the "Make Corrections to a Processed FAFSA" link. You must have a PIN in order to access your record. This PIN also serves as your signature. A parent signature will be required only when parental data is changed on the application.
Also, you may be asked to supply additional or supplementary information to your financial aid office. WKU will review an electronic version of your SAR to see if additional or supplementary information is needed. If additional information is needed, a Missing Information Letter (MIL) will be mailed to you.
VERIFICATION OF INCOME
Verification is the process of monitoring and ensuring accuracy of applicant data. The Central Processing System (CPS) typically selects 30% of schools' applicant pool. A student can be selected for verification because of inconsistencies and mistakes on their FAFSA form or by random selection.
Western Kentucky University must verify all applicants selected by the CPS. In addition, WKU may select applicants for verification who were not selected by the CPS.
Students who are selected for verification will be emailed a Missing Information Letter (MIL) to their WKU email account to notify them of the required tax returns needed and any other information required in order to complete the verification process. Along with the MIL, the student will receive a Verification Worksheet, which must be completed and returned to the Office of Student Financial Assistance along with the necessary tax forms. The Verification Worksheets may also be printed from our web page and then mailed or faxed to our office.
SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES
Although the process of determining a student's eligibility for Federal student aid is basically the same for all applicants, there is some flexibility.
In some cases it is necessary to take into account circumstances that might affect the amount you and your family are expected to contribute toward your education. These circumstances could include the death of a parent or spouse, recent unemployment, retirement of a parent, loss of income such as social security, or a family's unusual medical expenses or tuition expenses.
If such conditions apply to you or your family please come by our department and pick up a Special Circumstance Form. If you are out of town, you may also contact our office by phone or email fa.questions@wku.edu and the form will be mailed to you. Be sure to include the Student ID or social security number in your email.
