Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I minor in Film Studies?

Students who complete the Minor in Film Studies will gain a strong foundation in media literacy, including the ability to critically analyze and evaluate a visual text; knowledge of important aspects of the film industry and film technology; and an appreciation of the diverse uses of film across different times, cultures, and contexts.   Students who complete this minor will be better qualified for graduate study in a variety of fields such as Broadcasting, Film Studies, Fine Arts, and English, and for employment opportunities in film review, in writing for media magazines and entertainment programs, and in other aspects of media production.
Who should I talk to about minoring in Film Studies?
You should talk both with your major advisor and with Dr. Ted Hovet, director of the Film Studies minor.  Of course, you can talk informally with any of the FS minor faculty.  We invite the passionate and the merely curious student to drop by.
How does is fit in with my major?
If your major requires a minor, the FS minor works like any other.  It can also be added as a second minor.  However, if your major is Broadcast Communication, your minor must be completely outside your major; thus, film studies can only be a second minor in this case.
Can I take Film Studies courses even if I don't  minor in it?
Of course.  Film has become the dominant narrative medium of our age.  A deeper knowledge of film making, film history, the film industry or how to read film as a cultural text will be useful to anyone who appreciates film and wants to understand it better.
