The Annual Goldenrod Poetry Contest and Festival

Since 2004, Goldenrod has been a developing project of the English Club and the Creative Writing Committee striving to bring students and faculty together to listen to each other’s poetry. Godlenrod traditionally features a guest poet who makes the final judgments in the student and faculty poetry categories and announces the winner. In the past we have had poets Josh Bell, Lorraine Lopez, and Mark Yakich. As it currently stands, the Goldenrod Poetry Festival is open to all students and faculty across the campus. The program is always open for change and advancement—as are all English Club projects. We would like for more and more students and faculty to participate until we have full campus involvement.

Meetings

The English Club meets once each week of the semester. With every new semester comes new members and a new schedule. Meeting days and times are adjusted to be the most convenient for the most people; the English Club is run by and for students so they make the rules! Meetings are normally a thirty-minute long chat over pizza about current and future projects, well as ideas for new projects and directions for the club. Attendance is not mandatory by any means. If you join and can’t show up, no big deal. You can always participate via the Listserv. It’s all about being creative and having fun.

Theater

The WKU Theatre Department has productions several times a semester. The English Club makes an effort to attend a theatre production at least once a semester then reconvene for dinner or at the next meeting for discussion. It’s a lot of fun and a great way to be involved with the arts on campus.

Potluck

The English Club potluck is the end of the semester gathering of Club members and delicious food. Everyone gathers at a member’s house or some other location with their best dishes to chill out and let loose. Ironically, it is often the first event we plan, yet not surprisingly, one of the most memorable.
