WKU Electrical Engineering Faculty Opening

Tenure-track Faculty Opening in Electrical Engineering

The Department of Engineering at Western Kentucky University is pleased to offer an exciting opportunity in engineering education. We are seeking to fill a tenure-track faculty position in the Electrical Engineering Program. Areas of priority and specialization include energy systems, embedded systems and microprocessors; however, exceptional candidates from other areas will be considered. A successful candidate in an area related to energy systems will be invited to apply for the Greulich Endowed Chair in Energy Systems. A Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field is required. Candidates with relevant professional experience are especially encouraged to apply. The University has a strong commitment to achieving diversity among its faculty and staff. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from women and minorities.

The ABET accredited, baccalaureate-only electrical engineering program is offered jointly with the University of Louisville, with a strong emphasis on the implementation of design experiences. The program produces graduates who are ready to meet the challenges of industry and/or graduate study.

Our faculty are committed to creating a learning environment necessary to prepare students for the start of their professional careers. Candidates must be capable and willing to fully participate in this environment and dedicated to excellence in teaching. The responsibilities of this position include teaching, scholarship, and service that are to be conducted within the context of the University, Departmental, and Program Mission Statements. All WKU Engineering faculty are required to obtain professional licensure in the Commonwealth of Kentucky before application for tenure and promotion.

Our faculty are consistently engaged with students on projects that are typically sponsored by grants and industry. The role of the faculty is to guide the students through the projects using current technology and pedagogy. The faculty are also expected to mentor the students in extracurricular engineering activities such as IEEE student competitions and applied research projects with industry.

The Greulich Endowed Chair in Energy Systems is one of two fully endowed chairs in the Engineering Department at WKU. Since 2008, the $2 million endowment has supported the formation of a new departmental research lab, investigation of state-of-the-art hybrid electric vehicle technology, and various student projects within the Electrical Engineering Program. Ample opportunity exists to further the department’s energy-related research, student engagement, and industrial partnerships using resources provided by the endowment. A successful candidate in an area related to energy systems will be invited to apply for the Greulich Endowed Chair in Energy Systems.

Ogden College of Science and Engineering is home to a wide variety of multidisciplinary research centers which include:

• The Applied Physics Institute is a multidisciplinary center performing research and development projects in the areas of nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, material science, nanotechnology, applied biophysics, environmental science, electronics, industrial applications of physics, and homeland security applications. The Applied Physics Institute also supports the Master of Science in Homeland Security Sciences.

• The Bioinformatics and Information Science Center mission is to build an interdisciplinary faculty and student community that will collaborate and solve problems in bioinformatics and information science.

• The Biotechnology Center’s goal is to develop interdisciplinary activities which utilize biotechnology, including the integration of mathematics, statistics, computer science, and engineering.

• The Cyber Defense Laboratory conducts research to solve cyber security and counter cyber terrorism problems for both civilian and military customers.

• The Engineering Services Center uses the expertise of the Civil, Electrical and Mechanical faculty members to give engineering undergraduates hands–on engineering experiences as practicing engineers.
