Electrical / Electronic Engineering Services
Sever and Database Facilitation
Print PDF. Logging on to the EBS Server.pdf
The benefits to the new sever will consist of:
- Individual faculty, staff, and student login: Each faculty, staff, and student will be provided with there own secure storage volume located on the Engineering Sever. The storage capacities are as follows:
- Each faculty and staff will have a mapped drive of 10GB.
- Each student will have 100MB of storage.
- Student groups shared storage (provided as needed).
- Departmental storage space of 39GB
- The individual storage volumes can only be accessed and seen by the user that has rights to them
- License file services: The services will provide the functions required by most of the currently used software for licensing management.
- Printing via IP address: Printers will use IP addressing to print instead of the current Novell system. This provides the department with more flexibility with printing capabilities. (the full-size plotter will not be implemented at this time).
- Departmental storage: The departmental volume will be used for deploying new software, upgrades, and patches to the departmental computers through the use of MSI (Microsoft Self Installing packaging software). The volume will provide additional space for the department as we move to more on-line applications and databases for the students and faculty to use (Software and hardware databases).
Logon Sequence:
- Student Logon:
- Students will be required to login to Windows using their first and last name (provided by the university) as their username.
Ex. johnsmith (note: Do not use a period between first and last names. The username must be all lowercase letters and no space between their names).
- The password for the first time will be the 800 number (provided by the university) with no space between the numbers. The first time the student logs in; the server will require the student to change their password. The new password can be any combination of numbers (0-9) and letters (A-Z) both lowercase and uppercase.
- After the student logs in, the server will map their folder to the local computer. Under the My Computer window the student will see a folder called Home Directory, this is where the students need to store their personal files. This folder can only be seen by the individual student and is not sharable. If a student is part of a group (senior project, IEEE, etc…) they will in addition see a folder for that group. The students will have full control over their folder/s to add/delete files or create subfolders.
- The student’s computers will print from their resource rooms only.
** One item to note, each object (file, program, jpeg, etc…) placed in any folder belongs to that student that placed the object into the folder. That student is only allowed a specific amount of storage for their entire storage quota. Additional space might be required for students that belong to groups later. The students will be required to log off of Windows when they are done. This is done by selecting the Start button and then Logoff at the bottom of the pop up bar. If the student forgets to logoff their folder/s can be accessed by anyone who sits down at that computer. When the student logs off, the sever will synchronize items located in the folders from the local computer to the server.
- Instructors Computer:
- Novell will be provided only on the instructor’s computer within the Electronic Classroom 203, 1103, and Civil Learning Center (or any other room requested). This will allow you to access your files from Novell drives and/or the drive located on the server. Four possible combinations have been created for the faculty to logon to the computers:
- Logon to Novell with your username and password and a generic windows password: This will allow you to access the F:\ and R:\ drives but not the V:\ drive.
- Logon to Novell with generic username and password with your Windows logon username and password: This will allow you to access your V:\ drive on the server and only the R:\ drive.
- Logon to Novell with your username and password along with your Windows logon username and password: This will allow you to access your F:\, R:\, and V:\ drives.
- Logon using generic username and password for both Novell and Windows: This will allow you to access to the R:\ drive.
Generic Username and Password for both Novell and Windows:
Username: eestudent Password: eengineer
Username: mestudent Password: mengineer
Username: cestudent Password: cengineer
One way of remembering which logon is required think of which drives you need access, if any at all. Any Novell drive volume will require you to logon to Novell. If you need the drive volume on the EBS server then you will need to logon to it.
Report all problems to the Service Shop first: If any faculty, staff, or students are having problems with logging in, storage, or printing then please report all problems to the Service Shop first. This will eliminate confusion with microcomputing.
