WKU Journalism Building & Bell Tower

General Contractor - Star Construction
Concrete Contractor - Star Construction
Sitework Contractor - Scott & Ritter

Professor Matthew A. Dettman was involved in this project from design to completion. Working with students, he helped to develop the design criteria for the foundation system. When the building went to construction, he was involved in every aspect of quality control inspections including soil testing, concrete testing, steel inspection, caisson foundation inspection, and much more. An interesting part of the project was that the bell tower, being a tall narrow structure, had to be anchored down to the bedrock for high wind load resistance and tipping. This was done using rock anchors. Holes are drilled into bedrock and steel rods are epoxied into the rock so that if the building wants to tip in high wind, it is "anchored" to the ground. Mr. Dettman was responsible for overseeing the installation of these anchors and testing them prior to construction of the building. The anchors were installed and then pulled to 36,000 pounds to make sure they could withstand the loads. Also, gauges were embedded into the concrete foundations and attached to the rock anchors so that movement can be monitored in the future. Students were involved in every phase of the testing.
