Sitework Contractor - Scottys Contracting
The Scott Center was involved on this project right from the start. Professor Matthew A. Dettman worked with the designers on the foundation design, parking layout and design, and utility layout and design. Working with students, Professor Dettman was called in to do some subsurface investigations to determine depth to bedrock to determine what types of foundations were needed and how much rock blasting might be needed to install the underground utility lines. This helped dramatically in the bid process so the contractors had a better feel for the amount of work involved. Once construction began, students were involved in the inspection and testing of the engineered fill as well as foundation construction.
Below you see some students performing compaction testing of the engineered fill as well as observing the placement of the foundations. The bedrock was very shallow so some rock had to be removed and replaced with soil fill so that the entire building would be founded on a homogeneous material to minimize the potential for differential settlement.
