Courses for Spring 2010
Academic Program
All students participating in the Spanish Language Option must have completed at least 12 credit hours of college-level Spanish or the equivalent with a 3.0 GPA in Spanish courses. Students will be required to take a minimum of 12 semester credit hours and may take 15 semester credit hours. It is strongly recommended that students take only 12 hours in order to leave time for out-of-class cultural activities. All courses will make use of local and regional resources and will be taught by qualified Spanish faculty from Spain and the on-site program director.

This course will present a general overview about cultural and linguistic struggle between the center and the periphery in Spain. That is, we will focus on Spanish diversity, on the differences between Castile and the idea of Spain versus historical regions (Catalonia, Galicia, and the Basque Country). We will try to understand the historical reasons behind these distinctions as well as Spanish society’s reaction and opinions.
In this observation of Spanish society, we will spend some weeks studying and analyzing the historical presence of immigrants in Spain and its counterpart, the presence of Spaniards in the world (especially after the Spanish civil war).
