Academic Program
All students participating in the Spanish Language Option must have completed at least 12 credit hours of college-level Spanish or the equivalent with a 3.0 GPA in Spanish courses. Students will be required to take a minimum of 12 semester credit hours and may take 15 semester credit hours. It is strongly recommended that students take only 12 hours in order to leave time for out-of-class cultural activities. All courses with the exception of the humanities course will be taught in Spanish, and students will be expected to speak Spanish at all times.
All courses will make use of local and regional resources and will be taught by qualified Spanish faculty from Spain and the on-site program director.
Grades, Credits, and Transfers (Back to top)
Final grades will be based on the student’s grade in the course s/he is taking, class attendance, and participation in the various required activities. Before departure and as part of the admissions procedure, you will fill out a transfer request which will be kept on file until the end of the program. After grades are recorded, credit will be awarded by WEstern Kentucky University, then automatically transferred to your home institution. Prior to participating in the KIIS program, you should meet with appropriate faculty and other officials at your institution to discuss how the Murray State University courses will be counted by your institution.

The following is a list of courses offered in the 2012 Segovia program:

At least twelve hours of college-level Spanish required.
- SPAN 373 SPANISH CIVILIZATION AND CULTURE (3 HOURS)
(Syllabus) Survey of historical and cultural background of Spain and its people from the Roman colonization to the present.
- SPAN 374 LITERATURE AND CULTURE OF SPAIN (3 HOURS ) An introduction to the culture of Spain through the study of literary texts. The course will discuss the historical contexts and cultural milieu that produced selected texts. The analysis of literary texts will be introduced. (Syllabus)
- SPAN 470 ADVANCED ORAL SPANISH (3 HOURS)
Conversation units, dramatic sketches, original oral topics to advance students to a higher oral proficiency level. (Syllabus)
- SPAN 476 TWENTIETH CENTURY SPAIN (3 HOURS)
An introduction to the short story genre in Spain through the study of representative short stories by contemporary authors, some of them from Segovia. (Syllabus and Readings)
- SPAN 455 (1) TOPICS IN HISPANIC LITERARY AND CULTURAL STUDIES: SPANISH ART AND ARCHITECTURE (3 HOURS) The course focuses on significant aspects of Spanish fine arts and architectural representations thought the centuries. (Syllabus)
- SPAN 455 (2) TOPICS IN HISPANIC LITERARY AND CULTURAL STUDIES: SPANISH TRANSITION TO DEMOCRACY (3 HOURS) An exploration of Spain’s culture, politics and business from the end of Franquismo in 1975 through the changes of the democratic transition. (Syllabus)
- NEW course!! SPAN 499: WRITING WORKSHOP (3 hours) Local writer Maribel Gilsanz will guide students in the creation of different types of texts and the discussion of selected contemporary readings. (Read a description of the course in Spanish)
