• What are the benefits of the Dual Credit program?
The tuition (cost of the course) for a Dual Credit course is $200. This is a substantial savings as students taking courses at WKU who are not in the Dual Credit program are paying $248 per credit hour which is $744 for one course. (As of 6/2006)
Dual Credit classes meet in the high school during the regular school hours, unless another arrangement is agreed upon.
Interested students should consult with their high school counselor about which subjects are most appropriate and about which high school credit would apply toward their high school program. Dual credit is not limited to particular subject areas; however, some of the more popular courses are in the areas of English, History, Chemistry, Psychology, and Speech.
Only the students, with their parents and counselors, can answer this question. Since dual credit courses apply toward high school graduation requirements, the signature of a school official (counselor or principal) is required on the application form.
Students who have had success with dual credit college coursework usually have a overall GPA of 2.5 or better (on a 4.0 scale) and an attendance rate of 90% or better.
Yes. Although taken in the high schools, dual credit courses are "real" college classes. This means that students taking dual credit courses are WKU students and will have the rights and privileges of other WKU students. With these rights, though, comes the responsibility of the preparing for the challenges of college coursework. The grades earned in classes taken through the Dual Credit Program are the first grades the student will earn in college. Colleges and universities require that you transfer all college credits you have attempted. Whether the student decides to attend Western Kentucky University or another institution after high school, the dual credit course grades will go with them.
Grade reports are not mailed. If an Official Grade Report is needed, you may obtain one through TopNet by following steps 1-3 above, then click on "Obtain Official Grade Report."
