Things to Consider before Enrolling in Dual-Credit Courses

Before enrolling in dual credit courses, students should consult with their guidance counselor or principal to discuss how the courses fit in with their high school's graduation requirements. Most colleges and universities accept the courses that the students earn for their Western Kentucky University dual-credit courses. However, students are advised to check with the college of their choice to make sure.

Registration

The registration process will begin at the high school. Early in each semester, a representative from the Dual Credit program will visit the school to hold an informational meeting with the students and faculty. At this time, the program will be introduced and questions will be answered. It will be during this initial visit that the students will turn in their applications and application fees to the program’s representative. (Please note that students are not to mail their applications to WKU’s Admissions Office.) Also, while other students at WKU register themselves to their courses, the Dual Credit program performs this service for the students, registering them to their courses.

Payment

Payment for the course(s) will also be received during this visit early in each semester. However, the student will have the convenience of receiving one bill from Western Kentucky University. This bill is to be paid by October 15 for the Fall semester or March 15 for the Spring semester. If payment for the course is not received by these dates, the student will be dropped from the course for college credit. Enrollment in the course for high school credit will not be affected.

A student can still be registered to the course up to December 1 for the Fall semester or May 1 for the Spring semester provided that payment in full for the course is sent to the WKU Dual Credit Office plus a $20.00 late fee. To avoid the late fee and having your registration to the course canceled, please submit tuition payment along with application and application fee to the Dual Credit program representative at the high school visit or mail in the payment upon receipt of the bill from the WKU Bursar’s office.

Dropping a Course

If the student realizes that the course will be more difficult than expected, there is the option of dropping the course. However, if this option becomes the student’s choice, it is the student’s responsibility to inform his/her instructor as well as a representative from the Dual Credit program. Once registered to the course, a grade will be submitted regardless of attendance and/or student intent. A student has the option of being dropped from a course and not receiving a failing grade, until December 1 for the Fall semester or May 1 for the Spring semester. (Please note that communication of this intent should be directed to the Dual Credit office, not the university’s Registrar’s Office.)
