Guidelines to help complete the application process
Probably good to apply to 5 or 6 internships/AP4 programs.
I, Dr. Kelley, have the D&D computer matching forms.
GRE: some internships require, others not: www.gre.org
Dietetic Internship Application Form: there is a "standardized' form
at www.depdpg.org (not all
internships use this form, though most probably will)
Additional application materials may be needed, such as a resume,
biography/essay, questions to answer
Completing the application
-
Read instructions for each internship carefully
-
Items to include
-
Interview component? If there is an interview is it face-to-face or
telephone?
Verification Statement vs. Declaration of Intent
-
Graduated— get verification statement
-
Not graduated—get declaration of intent; states what course still need
to be completed to meet ADA/graduation requirements; after graduation,
you will need a verification statement. You should provide an
address
at which you can be reached following graduation to the didactic
director.
-
Provided to you by the didactic director (D.Kelley)
Tips sheet located in resource room—use it---provides an example
of the standardized application prepared by a practice group of The
American Dietetic Association
-
The standardized ADA application is used by most, but not all
internship programs
-
May not put every course ever taken on application
-
Enter courses in chronological order (oldest first)
-
To add lines (Table, add row)
-
To delete lines (Table, select row, Table, delete row)
-
Be sure to keep page numbers on pages
Who to ask to write letters of reference
-
Read instructions for each internship carefully
-
Advisor, didactic director (DPD), instructor, work reference—RD?
What information to give to someone you request to write a letter of
reference
-
Work experience: when/how long, duties
-
Extracurricular activities; leadership positions
-
If teacher: what courses and grades in those course
-
Potentially relevant/unique aspects about the internships applying to
(e.g.,
research hospital; pediatric rotation, etc.)
-
Any other information that might be relevant (e.g., career goals)
-
People writing recommendations need a signed waiver for each
recommendation
Writing the essay/biography/letter of application
-
Which one is it?
-
Letter of application = formal letter in business format
-
If not asked to write "letter of application" must do essay/biography
AND
a brief cover letter
-
Avoid excessive use of pronouns/words referring to self (I, me, my)
-
Short-term goals: 2-5 years
-
Long-term goals 5-10+ years
Transcipts
-
If attended multiple universities/colleges will need to request
transcripts
from all
-
From WKU – request that any transcript given to you be in a sealed
enveleop
( these are official transcripts but do have "issued to student" on the
transcript)
-
Sent with other application materials (probably) or directly to
internship
