Greetings,
The start of the fall semester is always an exciting time in the life of a University. Even though DELO doesn’t operate all programs on a term or semester basis, every program is impacted by the start of a new school year. So, another HAPPY NEW YEAR! to you all. Did you notice that this is the third time I’ve wished you a happy new year in the last nine months? Calendar Year, Fiscal Year, and School (or academic) Year. Now you understand why you are tired, you're working at least three years in one. Take a break.
There is lots of exciting happenings to read about again this month in our letter. I enjoyed handing out certificates at the T.J. Samson Community Hospital graduation luncheon...congratulations on another success Manon. Much time and effort was put in by Sharon and me to save the motorcycle course...and we did. Our winter term and correspondence study participated in another successful "Welcome Back Western" event...good work y’all.
We are pleased to welcome three new smiling faces to the DELO family...Mary Cole, Business Manager; Scott Blake, Cohort Program Specialist (Scott’s not new to DELO but is new to this new position); and Betty Davenport, Office Associate at Elizabethtown. We’re all glad that you joined the DELO team.
We’ll hold another commencement ceremony in NYC this month for 30 more of our UFT Communications Disorders Masters students...Go Laura.
For all of you who are wondering, Jake and Molly got started in their new school last week, and Adam is growing like mad and recovering from all the love his cousins showered on him the week earlier in Arizona.
Read on and enjoy...

Where could you find over 700 first through seventh graders excited about learning on five Saturdays? You could find them spread all over the campus of WKU and in Owensboro participating in Super Saturdays sponsored by The Center. Super Saturdays offers students a choice of classes. Past class offerings have ranged from science and mathematics to Spanish, puppetry, and poetry. Students in civil engineering make small boats out of concrete and watch them float. Some students venture into cyberspace as they learn how to make their own Web page. Other students create beads and jewelry or perform kitchen chemistry experiments.
Super Saturdays is designed to provide opportunities for high ability students to broaden the scope of their interests and interact with other bright young people. The classes emphasize a hands-on approach to learning in an environment where creative and critical thinking are encouraged. Super Saturdays will take place in Owensboro at WKU-Owensboro October 21, 28, November 4, 11. Please contact The Center For Gifted Studies for more information at 270.745.6323 or gifted@wku.edu

The WKU Department of Continuing Education, in partnership with the Kentucky Consumer Finance Association, co-sponsored the 2006 series of professional development seminars designed for members of the Consumer Finance Industry. Over 300 people participated in eight seminars held across Kentucky during August.
Each seminar featured an open discussion period with a panel of local legislators. This legislative session provided participants an opportunity to meet with local legislators as well as learn more about state government, the duties of their state legislators and their role in the representation of their constituents.
The programs concluded with a keynote session on the Privacy Act/Bankruptcy Review. This new legislation will make it harder to have debts wiped out by the courts and will require more debtors to pay back some or all of their debts.
Consumer Finance Association Seminars were held in Bowling Green, Hopkinsville, Lexington, London, Louisville, Owensboro, Paducah and Prestonsburg. In addition to dinner, participants received instructional materials and a certificate of completion.

The Office of Cohort Programs has kicked off several new projects this fall. We expanded our partnership with the College of Health and Human Services to start the fourth cohort of New York Speech Teachers in the Master of Communication Disorders program. Cohort Programs has also entered into a partnership with KAHPERD (Kentucky Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance) to offer a second group the opportunity to earn a Master of Science in Physical Education-Teacher Education Option. This completely online degree program is particularly appealing to area coaches as their hectic schedule of practices and games precludes their ability to commit to regularly scheduled on campus courses. This program has attracted students to WKU from Ohio, Indiana, and Georgia.
We have also launched the first semester of courses in partnership with WKU’s Bowling Green Community College. The Logan County Training Consortium Associate’s degree in Business Technology project will provide a sequenced degree program of primarily face to face and hybrid courses in Russellville. Students will also be advised to take advantage of courses offered through DELO’s extended campus program in Russellville as needed.
Our partnership with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction to offer a Master of Arts/Rank I in off campus locations has been extended to Muhlenberg County. The first cohort of Adair County area teachers graduated in August and subsequently the department has received inquiries from several dozen students requesting WKU to offer the sequence again. A second cohort in Adair County will begin in Spring 2007.
The Center for Training and Development and the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce’s Workforce Development Committee partnered to create the Warren County Industrial Consortium program. This program established the following objectives: 1) provide training on critical skill gaps as identified by industry, 2) secure various grants to help offset costs, 3) enhance the local economic development infrastructure by enticing potential employers to locate in the region and 4) ensure the program was easy to use and met existing employer’s needs.
The Warren County Industrial Consortium project was originally comprised of 21 different companies united to meet their collective training needs.
The staff at the Center for Training and Development (CTD) coordinated the delivery of an eight hour lean simulation workshop for the consortium. This event was a result of a collaborative effort between the Center for Training and Development and KCTCS - Office of Community and Economic Development in Madisonville, KY. This training was held on Wednesday, August 23rd at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center. There were 25 employees from 4 different companies that attended.
For more information on how these types of training offerings can be presented to your organization, please contact Manon Pardue at 745-1919.
Lean thinking got its name from a 1990’s best seller called "The Machine That Changed the World: The Story of Lean Production". The book chronicles the transitions of automobile manufacturing from craft production to mass production to lean production.
The first WKU Winter Term held in January of 2006 was a huge success, and planning for Winter Term 2007 is well under way. The first public event was an information table at Welcome Back Western August 30 on the South Lawn. In addition to spinning the prize wheel, students asked many questions about Winter Term.
Be watching for more information on Winter Term 2007. For questions about Winter Term, call Alicia Pirtle at 745-2478 or visit the Winter Term website.
