Message from the Dean
Greetings from the Dean...
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
October was a fast and furious month. Lots of program excitement all across DELO, and a very good month for the Knicely Center. Thank you, everyone, for your hard work.
This month we are planning to send an e-mail to faculty-all and staff-all and ask them if they would be interested in receiving our monthly newsletter. I know everyone gets way too much email, but some things are worth a few minutes to read. We think that more folks would like to see what we all do at DELO, and our newsletter each month gives a good way to find out. We would like to add anyone to our distribution list that would like to receive our letter.
Our Winter Term will truly be a "COOL PLACE TO BE" January 2-18, 2008. The enrollments are once again record setting thanks to great marketing and leadership from the Winter Term team. Way to go, group.
The regional campuses are setting records for enrollments again this year, and every location is physically planning growth as well. Glasgow expects to have more classrooms and faculty offices in January, thanks to the provost and president providing funds for some modular pods which will magically appear by then.
Owensboro will see a new facility funded by the county to house WKU-O administration and faculty offices along with student service functions. They plan to break ground in early spring.
Elizabethtown and Ft. Knox continues to be a tremendously exciting challenge. Ron is deeply involved with no less than four facility planning projects which include: the ECTC new building and remodeling of existing space for WKU-E in the current building, the plans for the proposed new building on the 20 acres recently deeded to WKU next to the current campus, the proposed on–post educational center remodel project, and the new WKU Radcliff Center for Regional Development which is to be running in January.
With all of this comes much time in planning and development for both facilities and curriculum. We are truly indebted to Juanita, Ron, and Joe for the tremendous added load each of them is under at this time. You are all fantastic and very much appreciated... now back to work.
I attended both the Glasgow and Owensboro Advisory Council meetings as well, and we certainly appreciate the help of these groups. The regional directors also had a very productive meeting with Dean David Lee and the Potter College of Arts and Letters department heads at the Glasgow campus last week. You will be hearing more about this discussion in the months ahead.
Several of us attended the UCEA South conference in Houston, Texas in October. Great presentations were given: by Laura, Dewayne and Elizabeth on "Different Stories...Same Endings: Marketing to Specialized Student Populations" and by Beth and Jenni on "Using Focus Groups and Online Surveys to Guide Marketing". Congratulations to everyone. A week later four of us attended the ACHE national conference and meeting in Roanoke, Virginia. I was honored to accompany Jenni in accepting the "2007 Crystal Marketing Award" for the 2006 Summer Sessions Marketing Campaign. I am truly proud of the recognition WKU/DELO staff receives at these national and regional meetings. We are developing a very positive reputation for WKU.
DELO was well represented at the Chamber Industry Appreciation Dinner in October. We spent a day on the Fort Knox Post with the Army HR Command leadership trying to plan for the future. It seems that there is never enough time to work in all the things we would like in a month.
I am genuinely thankful for the opportunity to serve as your dean of the Division of Extended Learning and Outreach at WKU. I am also thankful for each and every one of my great staff. In four short years our division has done some tremendous things for the customers we serve, and for them I say to you... Thanks.
Finally, the grandkids are all now full of Halloween candy. We will all meet together in Phoenix for Thanksgiving and once again give thanks for all our blessings. I hope your day is great as well.
Enjoy Turkey Day.
