Message from the Dean

Dr. Donald W. Swoboda

I hope you are all able to find some place of relief from this horrible heat we’ve had to endure for the past month. I've given up on the expectation of getting any rain soon. My lawn is now crunchy when you walk across it. The drought is so bad that word from Chaney’s Dairy Barn is their cows have started to give powdered milk and you can buy ice cream flakes that you have to add water to. Now that’s dry.

We had a very nice retirement reception for Marilyn on the 19th. I believed she has a bigger smile than I’ve ever seen. The primary cause is her new grandson and the fact she has full time availability now to be grandma. She even giggled when I told her that she sure missed a great Deans Retreat and I knew she really hated to miss it. Well, Marilyn, you just go have fun now, think of us once in a while, and stop in when you get to town.

Thanks to a lot of your good help, we delivered on our goal to distribute $1,000,000 to our WKU campus partners in July. In fact, we added to that by giving $20,000 to each of the regional campuses as well. I believe all of the receiving parties felt good about it, and we certainly felt pleased and privileged to have the opportunity to do it. This is one of the indicators used to measure DELO’s success. Congratulations to you all.

We had a few days with Jake, Molly, and Adam last week and that’s always good. They all say "Hi."

August will mark the beginning of another academic year and many of our DELO folks are scrambling to see that all the classes that we are involved with are ready for all those inquiring minds.

Have a good month and enjoy the newsletter...

Don S.

Bob Napier Competes in the National Senior Games

Bob Napier running in downtown Glasgow

In addition to working at the Glasgow Bookstore, Bob Napier is also known for running. He runs at least 10 miles, four days a week, and, as a result of his dedication, ran in Bowling Green’s 10K Classic on Oct. 21, 2006. The 10K was a sanctioned event to qualify for The Senior Olympics – 2007 Summer National Senior Games and Bob ran it in 42 minutes (3 minutes below the needed qualifying time). Senior games personnel invited him to run in the national games this summer, which were being held in Louisville. Since the 2007 games were so close in Louisville, Bob decided he should do it. "The fact that it is the senior Olympics," he said, made him feel "very excited."

Bob ran in the Senior Olympics 10K road race on July 2nd, with a time of 45 minutes and 3 seconds. The challenging course was laid out entirely in Iroquois Park. He said it was an "Olympic course" and he had "a lot of fun." We would like to congratulate Bob on a job well done.
