Message From The Dean

Welcome to the July letter, HAPPY NEW YEAR!...fiscal that is.

Dr. Donald W. Swoboda

WOW! It is truly hard to believe that we are halfway through 2009, and at the end of another fiscal year. I believe the old adage, "Time flies when you're having fun." Here at DELO, we do have fun while we work very hard with our partners to provide the highest quality programs and services possible. THANKS to all of you.

Fiscal year end is the time when we record the 12 month totals for enrollments, participation, all types of program counts, and fiscal data as well. Although we cannot give you all the numbers just now because it takes a while to get everything closed out for this year, while at the same time starting next year, we will give them to you as soon as possible. What I can tell you again this year is that we’ve had another great year and we should all be proud of the dreams that we’ve helped come true for our customers. The close of one year and opening of the next happens in a split second, and no one realizes it has happened.

We certainly want to welcome Amanda back to Independent Learning; she’s been out for a little while to get beautiful Evelyn started off in life. We already know who’s next in line for a like experience, so keep reading future issues of the letter to find out more. Now, let’s not let this get out of hand folks.

Congratulations to Sue Parrigin for being named Ambassador of the Month for the Chamber; see more later in this letter.

The biggest news is that June 30 is scheduled to be the beginning of a 14–month construction process for the Knicely Center. I’m hoping that the demolition part is completed in one week ...since I’ll be in Iowa seeing the other part of the family for a week. We are excited to make this investment in ourselves to better serve an expanding Knicely Center customer base. Watch us grow this facility.

Enjoy the letter, and remember to have a safe 4th of July.

Don S.

Summer Early Entry (SEE) program

Summer Early Entry (SEE) program logo

The Summer Early Entry (SEE) program is off and running at the WKU Community College. The program started June 15th for incoming freshmen to get a head start on their college career by taking their developmental education courses in the summer. The program is 7 weeks long and classes meet Monday through Thursday.

There are over 100 enrollments in the program this year — twice the enrollment from 2008. Students have the option of the following courses:

  • Fundamentals of Composition (DENG 055C)
  • Basic Algebra (DMA 055C)
  • Intermediate Algebra (DMA 096C)
  • College Reading Strategies (DRDG 080C)
  • University Experience (UCC 175C)

Tim Brotherton, Divisional Chair for Academic Support, believes that the program is very successful this year and that the growth is positive. He states,

"There were 48 new freshmen enrolled in these classes, and most have at least two classes. This is significantly more than last year’s numbers and represents many freshmen who will be able to take fewer developmental classes in the fall."

Campus Holds Praxis Workshop for Educators

Dr. Jim Jackson

Individuals entering the teaching profession in Kentucky and many other states must pass the Praxis examination as part of the teacher licensing and certification process. The Praxis I® tests measure basic academic skills, and the Praxis II® tests measure general and subject- specific knowledge and teaching skills.

WKU’s regional campus in Elizabethtown recently offered a two–day workshop for faculty and for future teachers who will be required to take the exam. The presenter at the workshop was Dr. Jim Jackson, consultant from Educational Testing Services who created the Praxis Series™ assessments for educators.

Day one was entitled Faculty Focus – Supporting Praxis Test Takers. This full day workshop was for faculty to gain a deeper understanding of the Praxis tests and how they can better prepare students for the assessments. It provided insights, strategies, and tools to analyze data from score reports. Faculty from both WKU-Elizabethtown and the Elizabethtown Community & Technical College attended.

Day two was entitled Candidate Awareness for Praxis II. A total of 17 students who are future teachers in elementary and middle grades education attended this workshop. Day two focused on test specifications and descriptions, study guides and individual study plans, practice tests, and strategies for success.

"This was time well spent for our faculty and will be very beneficial for our students. We are always excited to provide the necessary tools for their success," said Gena Jeffries, an instructor in WKU’s Department of Curriculum & Instruction. Jeffries organized the workshops.

WKU–Elizabethtown is the only college or university in Kentucky to offer such a workshop to help both faculty and future teachers prepare for the Praxis examination. Based on this year’s success, WKU will plan to hold more of these workshops in the future.
