Message from the Dean

Hello everyone and welcome to the June Newsletter.

Dr. Donald W. Swoboda

I started the month in Boston at the Eduventures annual meeting. I arrived at 3 pm on Thursday and left at noon on Friday, not a lot of historic sightseeing on this trip.

We did as we told you last month; WKU held three university graduation ceremonies, two for undergraduates and one for graduate students, and I participated in them all. Chamber of Commerce functions this month included attending the Small Business Luncheon as a guest of Rick Horn... thanks, Rick, attending the Legislative Action Committee meeting, a press conference announcing that NEW (a communications service business) was moving to Bowling Green (they will do their training at the Knicely Center... good job, Sue), dinner with the NEW executives and chamber staff, and finally a business after hours at Indian Hills Country Club.

Several of our staff attended the KACHE conference hosted by ECTC at the Elizabethtown campus the 12th–14th. Dinner at the Whistle Stop Restaurant in Glendale was fun. But even more fun was the E–Town/Radcliff/Ft. Knox appreciation dinner at Claudia’s in Sonora on the 16th with a shrimp boil, live entertainment, and great conversations... overall a great event thanks to Ron and his staff. I had the honor of presenting another Regional Campus Part–time Faculty of the year award which you will read about later in this letter.

Although the end of the regular semester marks the end of the academic year and a summer break or slowdown for many people at WKU, this certainly isn’t the case for those of us in DELO. Summer sessions, lots of summer educational events, endless planning meetings, and more fill our summer with continual and constant activities.

On Friday, May 30, DELO staff held an appreciation breakfast for Dr. Joe Etienne who has served for nearly a year as the Interim Associate Dean & Director at WKU–Owensboro. Dr. Etienne will be returning to the Department of Communication Disorders as their department head on July 1. A special thank–you goes out to Dr. Etienne for his tremendous service to WKU–O.

I expect each of you to get some well deserved R & R time scheduled and taken to refresh and reinvigorate yourselves both physically and mentally. I personally plan to take some time at the end of this month through the fourth of next to experience the excitement of grandson Adam who turned two in May. I understand he has a whole bag of new tricks to show me. I did take a couple of days over the Memorial Day weekend to drive to Des Moines with a truckload of garage and shop stuff for grandson Jake who is an inventor and builder of creative and innovative projects. This trip was also a chance to retrieve Ginny back to Bowling Green after a month of enjoying family and friends in four states. We spent much time packing boxes at the Rodgers home in preparation for their move to their beautiful new home this month. No, I didn't forget about Molly, she is just as wonderful as ever, but she is having trouble with her teeth falling out to make room for the next batch to arrive.

Hooray for Heroes

Hooray for Heroes is an event to show our appreciation to the soldiers, both active duty and retired, and their families. It is held annually in May in Radcliff.

Faculty and Staff Appreciation Dinner

Diane Owsley received the Outstanding Part-time Faculty Award for Elizabethtown/Radcliff/Ft.Knox from DELO Dean Dr. Don Swoboda at the annual faculty/staff retreat held at the historic Thurman–Phillips Home in Sonora. Diane has taught Psychology and Sociology classes for WKU for the past fourteen years and continually gets the highest student evaluations on our Elizabethtown campus. She is the Director for the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences at ECTC.

June Student of the Month – Perry Cook

Perry Cook

Perry is currently working on a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. He will be graduating in December. He chose elementary education as his major because "I enjoy working with children and influencing the minds of tomorrow." After graduation he plans to pursue a master’s in counseling and a rank one certification in administration.

ECTC/WKU Collaboration Meeting

participants at the ECTC/WKU collaboration meeting Key WKU faculty and staff involved in providing programs for ECTC transfer students recently met in Elizabethtown to discuss collaboration of programs and enhancing more seamless transfer from ECTC to WKU. The session was very productive and a number of initiatives are underway as a result of the meeting. The group agreed that these sessions should take place periodically to ensure continual developments to help local students meet their educational objectives.

Eighth Grade Institute

The annual Eighth Grade Institute was held in May on the ECTC campus. Approximately 1,000 students from area schools attended the event to get a glimpse of college classes and explore possible career paths. Students choose to attend sessions regarding a wide range of careers to learn what they need to do to enter different fields. Mrs. Jean Dudgeon, ECTC German instructor, is shown below on the right talking to the students about her classes.

Glasgow News

Appreciation Dinner

Glasgow appreciation dinner participants The Glasgow Campus held our 6th annual Appreciation Dinner. Although the weather didn’t cooperate, attendance was very good. Everyone enjoyed a good meal, entertainment, and awards.
Kentucky Repertory Theatre Young Performers Entertainment was provided by the Kentucky Repertory Theatre’s Young Performers who presented several scenes from Romeo & Juliet, under the direction of Robert Brock.
Curtis Boswell being presented an appreciation certificate by Dr. Bayless Curtis Boswell, husband of sociology instructor Lisa Boswell, was presented with an appreciation certificate for all the work he did for the ASB Christmas Float entry. The float took second place in the Glasgow parade and first place in the Edmonton parade.
Dr. Juanita Bayless and John Bayless Appreciation was also shown to John Bayless, husband of Campus Director, Juanita, for his help in keeping the grounds looking so wonderful. He has donated his time and energy by mowing the campus grounds. John has helped all this year as well as last year. He is shown accepting the certificate from Dr. Bayless.

Cindy teaches Office Systems Technology and Business Technology classes at the Glasgow Campus. Leigh Ann Wells, Suzanne Britt, and Linda Fitzpatrick The Glasgow Math ladies (Leigh Ann Wells, Suzanne Britt, and Linda Fitzpatrick) were recognized for the pilot program (TEAM MATH) that they designed and implemented for the WKU Math Department.

Glasgow Graduates Honored

The WKU – Glasgow Campus is very proud to announce the following Spring 2008 graduates who have received recognition:

Kelly Headrick, Elementary Education major, was awarded with the Scholar of the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences. She was also awarded the Distinguished Scholar in Elementary Education at WKU – Glasgow.

In addition, the following WKU-Glasgow students received awards:

  • Angela Banks – Outstanding Undergraduate in Elementary Education at WKU-Glasgow
  • Jeremy Myatt – Distinguished Scholar in Middle Grades Education

Dynamic Leadership Institute

Under the leadership of Dr. Juanita Bayless, Associate Dean and Campus Director and James McCaslin, Assistant Director, WKU’s Glasgow Campus celebrated the completion of its Dynamic Leadership Institute this spring. Six students completed Phase One of the program and five others advanced through Phase Two.

The students participated in six leadership programs. Topics addressed in the training were leadership style, creative problem solving, the role of personality in leadership, diversity strategies, visionary leadership, emotional intelligence, business etiquette, and team decision making. Students celebrated the completion of the program on May 2, 2008, at a banquet in Glasgow.

The campus has provided DLI’s initial phase since the Fall 2002 and added the second phase in Fall 2005. The program is offered each semester. Health Days

The second annual Health Days was held at the Glasgow Campus. Students from the Associate Degree in Nursing program provided students, faculty, and staff with information on nutrition, the importance of sun protection, and blood pressure screenings, among other topics.

First Graduates of Weyerhaeuser Cohort

On May 10, Travis Smith of Roswell, GA became a truly historic alumnus of Western Kentucky University. He is the first to earn a Bachelor’s degree after completing the entire program through a unique partnership between WKU and the Weyerhaeuser Corporation. As the program is completely online, the only time Travis has been on the WKU hill was the day he walked the line.

The partnership began in the Summer of 2003 when the Bowling Green Community College developed the Business Technology degree with a Manufacturing Management concentration distance learning program to meet the needs of the company to grow its leaders. In 2006, the partnership with Weyerhaeuser was extended to offer a bachelor’s completion degree in Technology Management through WKU’s department of Architectural Manufacturing and Sciences.

Tommy Pike of Austin, MN also participated in commencement. He completed the Bachelor’s degree program as a transfer student from Riverland Community College and South Dakota State University. Other students in the Weyerhaeuser cohort program will be finishing up their degree this fall.

KACHE Conference

Several DELO staff members attended the Kentucky Association of Continuing Higher Education (KACHE) Spring meeting on May 13 & 14. The meeting was hosted by Elizabethtown Community and Technical College (ECTC). Topics at the meeting included a Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) update from Dr. Jim Applegate, a legislative update from Tim Moore, Issues facing Active-Duty Enrollees, and Managing Student Support Services for Adults at Branch Campus Locations. Dr. Ron Stephens, Associate Dean – DELO and Director, WKU – Elizabethtown/Radcliff/Ft.Knox, served on a panel for discussion about student services. Gail Ledford, Elizabethtown/Radcliff/Ft.Knox Student Services Coordinator, told of her experiences with active-duty students.

Leadership Academy Program Introduced at Quebecor World Franklin

On May 21, Manon Pardue, Director–Center for Training and Development, and Stacey Biggs, DELO Marketing Manager, assisted Quebecor World Franklin, a leader in providing innovative and superior-value printed products and services, with the rollout of their Leadership Academy program.

Manon worked with the Leadership Team at Quebecor to provide support in the creation of their succession planning program. WKU’s Center for Training and Development will provide much of the training to the employees of Quebecor. This program will be delivered over a 12–month timeframe and cover different training topics to enhance skills in new supervisors.

As part of the partnership, DELO Marketing created a logo and tagline for the year–long training program called INKSInspiring a New Kind of Supervisor which aligned with the printing company terminology. Teresa Hayes, HR Manager at Quebecor, unveiled the new logo to the group and Manon Pardue kicked off the training sessions with a presentation on the Work Ethic Seal Program entitled What Ever Happened to Ward Cleaver?

Continuing Education News

Athena Partnership - Blanchard Courses to be offered

WKU’s Continuing Education department and Athena – The Training Professionals are partnering to bring two Ken Blanchard training programs to managers and leaders in Bowling Green and surrounding areas this summer. One Minute Manager® started a management revolution more than twenty years ago. With 13 million copies sold worldwide, and 10,000 copies still selling every month, it is one of the best–selling management books in history.

Blanchard’s Introduction to Situational Leadership® II is a comprehensive, yet practical method for effectively leading and developing people into peak performers. In these highly interactive seminars, you will learn how to build and lead a team, evaluate your team’s performance, and develop an action plan for continued leadership success.

The programs are scheduled for July 24 & 25 at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center.

Public School Strings Program Spring Recital

More than 350 students from Bowling Green City Schools and Warren County Schools performed an eclectic array of music from Bach to Green Day during their spring concert on May 15 at E. A. Diddle Arena. The concert was the culmination of many hours of practice throughout this school year.

The students from the Warren County school system are part of the WKU pre–college string development program, which was developed by the WKU Music Department and the Division of Extended Learning and Outreach (DELO) in 2003 to offer high quality instruction in orchestral stringed instruments in a nurturing environment.

String Explosion Camp

WKU’s Music Department and the Division of Extended Learning & Outreach are pleased to host a summer music camp for strings students.

String Explosion 2008 is an afternoon camp for area violin, viola, cello, and double bass students in fourth through ninth grade. The camp will be held July 22 through July 25 in the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center on the campus of WKU and is geared toward students learning in an orchestra setting. Students will gain new skills and improve their playing through a variety of activities including string orchestra, sectionals, group classes, and outdoor games. A final performance for family and friends will be in the Recital Hall at the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center at 3:45 p.m. on July 25.

If a child is taking lessons for the first time and would like to participate in String Explosion 2008, a minimum of four private lessons prior to the camp is required. Camp Director Sarah Berry is available to give private lessons this summer; contact her at (270) 745-5146 or sarah.berry@wku.edu. Gun Safety and Maintenance for Women

The WKU Continuing Education department and Gander Mountain in Bowling Green partnered to offer Gun Safety & Maintenance for Women on Tuesday, May 27, at the Gander Mountain store on Bluegrass Farms Boulevard. Participants learned how to safely handle firearms, proper maintenance and storage, proper supplies and cleaning techniques, and how to use a firearm more efficiently.

Online Teaching Summer Camp

The 2008 Online Teaching Summer Camp was held on May 19–20 and May 27, 28, and 29. The 5–day camp is designed for faculty who are interested in developing online courses. Eighteen WKU faculty participated in the camp which was held in the Mass Media and Technology Hall. The Office of Distance Learning sponsored the camp. Dr. Sally Kuhlenschmidt, Director of the Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching, worked with faculty on a host of subjects such as creating the online instructor presence, creating community in online courses, assessment issues, and legal and ethical issues involved in teaching online.

Julie Dent, Shawn Brewer, and Kathy Barnes provided training in how to use Blackboard tools effectively. Pam Wilson, Assistant Director of Distance Learning, planned the camp. Presenters from DELO included Robert Wyatt, Director of Distance Learning, who presented a session on learning objects. Amanda McGaughey, Coordinator of Independent Learning, presented a lunchtime showcase on redesigning online courses as Independent Learning courses. Leyla Zhuhadar and Elizabeth Romero, Instructional Designers and Kennina Porter, Instructional Support Specialist, presented on the services and training available to faculty through the TSOnline Center. Tabatha Spain, Testing Specialist, presented on the services of the DELO Testing Center.

Computer Camp

DELO staff members, Neil Bradley, Brenda Dickson, Jackie Ellis, and Gena Jeffries, were among the 25 who participated in IT’s 2008 Computer Camp on May 21 through 23. The participants were introduced to all aspects associated with WKU IT issues, including downloading and ordering software, purchasing equipment, Microsoft Office 2007, ITV, creating websites, and tech support. After the three days of training, each participant received a certificate of completion. All agreed that it was a worthwhile endeavor and appreciated the time and effort put into the camp.
