Message from the Dean

Dr. Donald W. Swoboda

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Well, 2008 is now officially here. I hope all of you had a very exciting and restful holiday break. I continue to be overwhelmed by the tremendous benefit we have here at WKU in the form of a two–week break at this time of year. Thank you again, WKU.

Ginny and I had a truly delightful time visiting our daughter Shari and grandson Adam at their home in Chandler, AZ for Christmas. What made it even more special was the fact that our other daughter Teresa and her family (that of course includes Jake and Molly, our other two grandkids) were there too, and there is no doubting the saying that Christmas is for kids... even if some of those kids are grandparents.

Thanks to everyone for your personal wishes, holiday cards, and gifts; they are all very much appreciated. The first day back means that it’s the first day of Winter Term, and we are very pleased with the enrollment numbers. I’ll give you the official numbers in the next newsletter, but it will be another record for this young program.

The holiday decorations are now gone from the Knicely Center and I miss them, but they will appear again in less than a year, which seems to come quicker than ever the older I get. The Center is now brightened by the smiles and excitement of the DELO staff as they begin another calendar year of programs and events. This same "brightening" is taking place in Garrett Conference Center where our Distance Learning, Independent Learning, and Testing Center operate, as well as at each of our Regional Campuses in Glasgow, Owensboro, and Elizabethtown/Ft. Knox. Our plan is that the Radcliff Center will begin offering classes this semester also, so we hope all the construction is completed quickly.

I visited with Ron Stephens at his home in Elizabethtown on Saturday to see how he is progressing following his knee replacement surgery on the 18th of December. I was pleased to see that he is doing great. He’ll be in a rehabilitation mode there for a few weeks; so if you care to send a card, call Brenda Dickson at 745-1900 and she will give you his address.

We’re looking forward to attending another graduation ceremony for our Communication Disorders Cohort master’s program in NYC on January 16. This will be our third class to graduate from WKU without ever being on our campus. Speaking of excitement in our Cohort Programs unit, our newest employee, Jenna Haugen, started with us on January 2... Welcome aboard, Jenna.

I'm also pleased to announce and congratulate Pam Wilson on her promotion to Assistant Director of Distance Learning.

Again, I wish you all a very healthy, happy, and productive new year, and remember to write 2008 in the year space.

Enjoy the letter...

Don S.

Winter Term 2008 is Under Way

Big Red juggling snowballs

Enrollment for the 2008 Winter Term has topped the mark set in the first two years of the program. More than 2,445 students are taking classes and this is an increase over the approximately 1,580 students who took classes during the University’s first Winter Term in 2006 and 1,924 in 2007. There are approximately 188 faculty members leading 261 sections during the 2008 Winter Term.

WKU Winter Term courses are on the Bowling Green campus as well as the regional campuses in Glasgow, Elizabethtown/Fort Knox and Owensboro and online. WKU also has 95 students participating in 21 Study Abroad sections during the Winter Term. Courses are being offered in the Bahamas, Germany, England, Mexico, Malaysia, Costa Rica, and India.

Students make faster progress toward graduation by taking classes during Winter Term. The Winter Term also gives students additional opportunities to take classes that are difficult to get into or prerequisites they need for other courses.

On January 8, the Winter Term department sponsored a networking lunch for Winter Term students and Winter Term faculty at Fresh Food Company in DUC. The purpose of the lunch was to give students and faculty another opportunity to spend time together and get to know each other better. Door prizes were provided by the Campus Activities Board. Below are photos taken from the lunch.

DELO Team Takes First Prize in Toys for Tots Wreath Decorating Contest

DELO wreath in the Toys for Tots Wreath Decorating Contest

The recent Toys for Tots Wreath Decorating Contest sponsored by the University Bookstore was won by a group of DELO staffers. The theme for decorating the wreaths was "WKU past, present, or future". Wreaths were given to teams to decorate. The wreaths were then judged and put into an auction with proceeds going to Toys for Tots.

The DELO team consisted of employees from Distance Learning, the DELO Testing Center, Independent Learning, and the TSOnline Center. The team chose to highlight the present construction underway at WKU. The wreath was decorated with toy construction vehicles, orange traffic cones, yellow saw horses, and yellow caution tape for the bow.
