About the Training Consortium of South Central Kentucky



The Consortium was formed in 2004 by three companies – BANDO, DESA and NASCO. These companies joined together to provide training for their employees by gaining access to funds through Bluegrass State Skills Corporation (BSSC). Approximately 50% of training cost for grant approved members can be offset by the BSSC grant. The consortium is managed by a board of directors consisting of a minimum of 3 industry representatives as well as civic and educational leaders. Today there are more than 30 member companies in the consortium.

What We Do:

The Consortium coordinates training opportunities for business and industry in south central Kentucky primarily, Warren County. While the board reviews many training providers to ensure there is a broad spectrum of courses available to meet the needs of our members, the curriculum is primarily developed by Western Kentucky University (WKU) and the Bowling Green Technical College (BGTC).

When We Train:

Training classes are scheduled in 3 quarters – January through November. To view the current training schedules visit the websites: Professional Development Training and Technical Training.

Where the Training is Held:

Training is held locally. Member companies often volunteer their facilities to hold classes in order to reduce the cost of the training. If not at a member location, classes are held at various training centers provided by WKU and BGTC as well as the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce.

Type of Training:

Training classes normally fall within four areas:

  • Supervisory/Management Training - Fair Supervisory Practices and Performance Appraisals;
  • Computer Training - Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint;
  • Quality Assurance Training - Lean Manufacturing, TQM, and SPC;
  • Technical Training - Presentational Speaking and Effective Listening;

Training needs are solicited from the HR department of member companies. The board makes every effort to develop the class schedule based on company needs. In 2008, the Consortium began offering online courses. Topics range from Accounting and Total Quality Fundamentals to Microsoft Project.

Training Cost:

There is a $50 membership fee to join the Consortium. The total cost for each class is divided by the number of people enrolled in the class.

Why Train:

Global competition and technology innovations impacting the workplace make it necessary for people to consistently update their knowledge and skills. Training provides the employee with improved knowledge and skills but also highlights their worth within the company. Excellent training improves elements across the whole company and ultimately reflects in the product and services received by the customer.
