The Center for Training and Development (a unit of the WKU Division of Extended Learning and Outreach) and the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce’s Workforce Development Committee partnered to create the Warren County Industrial Consortium program. This program established the following objectives: 1) provide training on critical skill gaps as identified by industry, 2) secure various grants to help offset costs, 3) enhance the local economic development infrastructure by enticing potential employers to locate in the region and 4) ensure the program was easy to use and met existing employer’s needs.

The Warren County Industrial Consortium project was originally comprised of 21 different companies united to meet their collective training needs.

The staff at the Center for Training and Development (CTD) coordinated the delivery of an eight hour lean simulation workshop for the consortium. This event was a result of a collaborative effort between the Center for Training and Development and KCTCS - Office of Community and Economic Development in Madisonville, KY. This training was held on Wednesday, August 23rd at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center. There were 25 employees from 4 different companies that attended.

What is "Lean Manufacturing"?

Wikipedia.com defines lean manufacturing the following way; "By eliminating waste quality is improved, production time is reduced and cost is reduced. Lean ‘tools’ include constant process analysis, ‘pull’ production, and mistake-proofing. Lean is basically all about getting the right things, to the right place, at the right time, in the right quantity while minimizing waste and being flexible and open to change."

Lean thinking got its name from a 1990’s best seller called "The Machine That Changed the World: The Story of Lean Production". The book chronicles the transitions of automobile manufacturing from craft production to mass production to lean production.
