Master of Arts in Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Individuals who want to gain foundational clinical skills and professional experience in mental health counseling are encouraged to apply to WKU's MAE in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. Upon completion of the CACREP-accredited program, graduates will be qualified for certification as a National Certified Counselor by the National Board for Certified Counselors. The program also provides curriculum necessary to acquire a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate credential from the Kentucky Board of Licensed Professional Counselors.

Upon completion of the MAE in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, graduates are prepared to enter careers in the following fields:

  • In-patient and community addictions
  • Community counseling centers, including rape crisis, domestic violence, and community mental health centers
  • Criminal justice system, including prison, probation, and parole
  • Group homes for children or the elderly
  • Hospitals

Program Goals

Through classroom and clinical experiences, the MAE in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program will provide you with collaboration and consultation skills. As a student, you will be able to provide supervised counseling at a clinical site consistent with your interests, interact with WKU faculty through scholarly activity, and become active in professional organizations.

Throughout the program, you will learn about current issues and trends affecting the profession, how to interact with other mental health professionals, and how to work with clients from varied backgrounds.
