Masters in Athletic Administration

Master of Athletic Administration & Coaching Degree

Summary

Western Kentucky University’s Master of Science in Recreation and Sports Administration with a concentration in Athletic Administration and Coaching is a 100% online degree program. This cohort goes beyond theoretical instruction and provides knowledge, skills, and professional expertise in the fields of athletic administration and coaching. This program is designed to prepare interscholastic athletic professionals for the leadership skills required as both disciplines in coaching and athletic administration grow.

The program is characterized by:

  • A format that is designed for a specific number of students (cohort) to move through the program coursework together, taking the same classes and building peer relationships;
  • Courses that are offered 100% online;
  • Sequencing that outlines a sure path to degree attainment, guaranteed placement in classes, and additional admissions and registration services;
  • Curriculum that offers both theoretical and practical application with respect to legal, fiscal, ethical, and foundational contexts to athletic administration; and
  • Faculty that bring formal education and personal experience.

Overview

The 100% online Master of Athletic Administration & Coaching Cohort Program was designed to meet the demands of working physical education professionals. This web-based program is targeted to highly motivated individuals and will allow students the ability to increase their understanding of the field of Athletic Administration without altering their personal and professional schedules. Emphasis is placed on preparing individuals for the ever changing economic, political, legal, and marketing concerns that are a part of the sports industry.

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Further their knowledge through an application based course structure designed to enhance skills and competencies in athletic administration and coaching;
  • Utilize current working problems within the profession in order to assess solutions to established needs; and
  • Build a professional networking base that allows for the sharing of issues and problems in order to integrate a logical problem solving paradigm in the solution process.

Program of Study (33 Total Hours)

This program includes 21 credit hours of core coursework in Recreation and Sports Administration with 12 credit hours in the Athletic Administration and Coaching concentration. The courses offered are as follows:

I. Recreation & Sports Administration Core (21 credit hours)

  • REC 501—Research Methods in Recreation & Sport
  • REC 513—Recreation and Sport Administration
  • REC 515—Recreation and Sport Facility Development
  • REC 517—Legal Issues in Recreation and Sport
  • REC 519—Fiscal Practices in Recreation & Sport
  • REC 521—Public Relations in Recreation & Sport
  • REC 523—Theoretical Foundations of Recreation & Sport

II. Athletic Administration & Coaching Concentration (12 credit hours)

  • REC 530—Independent Investigations
  • REC 542—Current Issues
  • REC 543—Sports Medicine
  • REC 544—Championship Events (Practicum)

Admission Requirements

The minimum requirements for acceptance into the Master of Science in Recreation and Sports Administration with a concentration in Athletic Administration and Coaching are as follows:

• A Bachelor’s Degree
A bachelor’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing
• Application & Fee
Students seeking a graduate degree must obtain an Application for Admission (Form A) from WKU’s Office of Graduate Studies. Visit www.wku.edu/graduate to download the form. The completed form along with a one-time application fee of $40.00 (non-refundable) must be returned to the Graduate Studies office.
• Transcript Record
Graduates of accredited institutions other than WKU must submit an official transcript showing the completed degree to the Office of Graduate Studies.

NIAAA Certification

Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to apply for certification through the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association to be a Certified Athletic Administrator or Certified Master Athletic Administrator.
