Alternate Admission Process

The following information is intended for graduate students pursuing the alternate admission route for graduate school admission. Please follow the guidelines as indicated below.

  1. Apply to Graduate School in Weatherby Administration Bldg. room 207. The telephone number is (270) 745-2446. After you have applied for graduate school, a student can complete up to 12 hours of graduate work within one semester before the admission process is complete. Please note that even though you may have registered or have completed 12 hours of graduate work, there is no guarantee of admission.
  2. You will receive a letter from the graduate office indicating your admission status. If your admission to graduate school has been denied, then you will need to proceed through the following steps.
  3. Set up an appointment with your graduate advisor (Dr. Randy Deere) randy.deere@wku.edu to review the process.
  4. Obtain three letters of recommendation on your behalf indicating future success with graduate studies.
  5. Write a letter requesting permission to pursue the alternate admission process. In this letter, include a thorough narration of why you want to attend graduate school and your goals for professional employment once completed.
  6. Bring your letters of recommendation, and request for alternate admission letter to your graduate advisor (Dr. Deere) and he will set up an appointment for the applicant to be interviewed by various members of the graduate faculty.
  7. Once the interview is completed, the Department Head or Graduate Advisor will write a rational for recommendation and will forward your portfolio of materials to the Graduate Office. Then the Graduate Office will forward the admission papers back to the department for approval. The department will then forward the papers to the college dean’s office for approval.
  8. Once this process is completed, you will be fully admitted, conditionally admitted or denied admission. Conditional admission is where the department or university places restrictions on the students admittance process such as completing specific coursework etc.
