Civil War Veterans Project
Civil War Veterans
As one of its first projects, the Center for the Study of the Civil War is planning to make available online—in a keyword searchable format—several important publications of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that contain reminiscences of the Civil War written by Union and Confederate veterans. Three significant primary printed sources will constitute the core of the Civil War Veteran Project: Southern Historical Society Papers (52 vols., 1876-1959), Confederate Veteran (43 volumes, 1893-1934), and all the various state volumes comprising the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS) series (66 volumes, 1878-1933). These sources are sometimes hard to find (particularly in northern and western states) and would be of great use to scholars, students, genealogists, and Civil War enthusiasts in general. In the future, the Center will also make available online other primary sources, particularly firsthand accounts related entirely to the Civil War in the West (and especially Kentucky). In developing the website, and the keyword searchable format for printed primary sources, the Center—relying on specialized technological expertise of WKU’s Information Technology Division—will follow the format and conversion process developed by the University of Michigan’s “Making of America” website. Progress on developing and launching these valuable resources will be reported here.
