Kappa Theta Chapter began as Western Kentucky University Department of Nursing Honor Society in October 1981. The official charter was received in April of 1988. The purposes of Sigma Theta Tau are as follows:

| C. | Foster high professional standards. |
| D. | Strengthen commitment to the ideals and purposes of the profession. |
