Frequently Asked Questions · What exactly is American Humanics? The American Humanics (Nonprofit Administration) department is affiliated with an alliance of over 70 colleges and universities throughout the United States. The partnership between our program and the national organization allows for students enrolled in the academic minor to be formally certified in Nonprofit Management and Leadership. The minor itself is interdisciplinary, including 22 hours of study and an internship (For additional information, please click here) The nonprofit sector accounts for one of the most rapidly growing employment areas in the United States, and our students are well prepared to take on the important leadership roles for the future of these organizations. · What kind of internships will I be able to participate in? Students enrolled in the minor are required to participate in a 300 hour internship program. Many of these positions are paid internships, while others are nonpaid. A diverse group of nonprofit leaders mentor and prepare students for a wide range of positions in the nonprofit sector. Examples of student internships include: Community Excellence Empowerment Development, Ronald McDonald House, Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee, Barren County Family YMCA, Georgia March of Dimes, Barren River Area Safe Space Inc., Department for Community Based Services, VSA Arts of Kentucky, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, United Way of America, and many more. For more information, please click here. · What is AHMI, and why is it required for the minor? The American Humanics Management Institute is the national management conference of the American Humanics program. The alliance of colleges and programs throughout the nation meet for three days for networking, workshops, and seminars. Students who attend the conference are exposed to the diverse range of the nonprofit world, and make contacts to further their own professional development. AHMI attendance is required for certification due to the fact that conference attendance is central to understanding the mission and practicality of a nonprofit leadership education. · What type of major programs are students enrolled in? One of the most rewarding and convenient aspects of the American Humanics (Nonprofit Administration) program at WKU is the fact that students enroll in the minor from a wide variety of academic programs. Students enrolled in the minor have majored in Recreation, Sociology, Social Work, Healthcare Administration, Communications, Political Science, Graphic Design, Business Administration, Broadcasting, and many more. · Does a student organization exist for American Humanics students at WKU? Yes! The American Humanics Student Association offers students a chance to partake in service projects and social events to promote the program throughout the community. AHSA undertakes two annual service project partnerships with local nonprofit organizations, organizes the annual Bowling Green Nonprofit Awards Reception, and provides a great avenue for making friends and having a great time outside of the classroom.
