Admission Requirements & Application Process for the MSN Program

  • Applicants must provide evidence of:
  • Completion of a CCNE or NLN accredited BSN program with an undergraduate GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. Graduates of non accredited BSN programs are considered on an individual basis.
  • Prior education in health assessment and nursing research.
  • One year of full time nursing experience is required prior to enrolling (following acceptance) in clinical courses in the nurse practitioner program. New graduates currently practicing will be considered for part-time study.
  • Application deadline for the fall semester is April 1st, and for the spring semester is October 1st. All admission materials must be received by the application deadline. This includes completion of the interview required by the MSN Committee. The interview will be scheduled by the MSN program faculty following receipt of a completed application. Incomplete applications will be considered for the following semester.
  • Admission is a two-step process involving submission of materials to the WKU Office of Graduate Studies and Research and the School of Nursing MSN program.

Submit to the School of Nursing, attention MSN Coordinator, the following:

    • Three professional references on the form provided.
    • A professional resume or curriculum vitae.
    • A written goal statement. This may be submitted to the MSN Coordinator by E-Mail attachement or mail. Your statement should be approximately 500 words and should include the following:
      • What is your career goal? What specialty concentration are you applying to enter and why? Why is specialty a good choice for you?
      • Why are you choosing WKU?
      • How are you planning and making adjustmens to your life to allow for successful completion of graduate school?
      • Where do you hope to be 3-5 years following graduation from the MSN program?
  • Following receipt of all admission materials (both Graduate Studies and MSN program materials), an interview will be scheduled by one of the MSN faculty.

Applicants will be required to complete the GRE in any of the following instances:

  • Less than a 2.75 cumulative undergraduate GPA
  • Applying for admission to the psychiatric nurse practitioner program (these applicants must also meet the requirements and be accepted as non-degree seeking students at the University of Louisville, School of Nursing).
