National Certification American Humanics, Inc. offers a national certification in nonprofit leadership. Through Western Kentucky University's affiliation with American Humanics, Inc., students in the AH Minor are eligible to pursue this certification. Requirements to Receive American Humanics Certification include: - Complete nonprofit competency requirements serving as a framework for university curriculum and selected seminar work meeting the needs of the nonprofit sector. Most competency requirements are met in the minor coursework. Competency areas of study include: Introduction to the Nonprofit Sector, Ethics, Youth Development/Mentoring, Volunteer Management/Board Development, Fundraising and Resource Development, Finance, Management, and Marketing, and Technology.
- 300 hours internship(s)
- Meaningful engagement in leadership and community service activities with the WKU American Humanics Student Association
- Complete a baccalaureate degree from an affiliate college or university
- Attend at least one annual American Humanics Management Institute (Rec 494-Winter Term)
Minor The minor in American Humanics (reference number 309) prepares students for successful careers in nonprofit organizations. The first step is to login to TopNet and submit a 'Change of Minor' request followed by arranging a meeting with Dr. Poff.
Students can take courses from several departments and programs of study, and gain competencies and experiences required for the American Humanics national certification. This minor requires a minimum of 22 hours.
Note: All internships for the AH minor must be pre-approved by Dr. Poff in order for them to apply toward the national certification. Required courses (22 hours) - Rec 220 Intro to Nonprofit Human Service Organizations (3 hrs) [Fall, Winter-online]
- Rec 494 American Humanics Management Institute (1 hr) [Winter-Conference + online work]
- Nonprofit internship through major department or REC 496 AH Internship [Fall, Spring, Summer]
- Choose at least one 3 hr course from the 4 categories below (3 hours x 4 classes = 12 hrs)
- At least 50% of hours must be at the 300 or 400 level.
