The Department of Public Health began moving from Science and Technology Hall during the spring term of 2007. Initially moving into Garret Conference Center, the Department now occupies remodeled offices located in the old Student Health Services area within Academic Complex. This space became available when Student Health moved to their new building. The Department should have the move completed by the beginning of the fall 2008 term

Sara Miller, a student in WKU’s Nonprofit Administration (American Humanics) minor program, has been selected for a national nonprofit academic scholarship. Miller, a healthcare administration major and honors student from Shepherdsville, will receive an American Humanics Academic Award which provides recipients with a $1,000 scholarship.

Saturday, February 9, 2008 the College of Health and Human Services hosted the 4th annual Freshman Academic Achievement Awards in the Kentucky Room of the Kentucky Library and Museum. Students studying in the College and were named to either the Dean’s List (3.4-3.7 GPA) or President’s List (3.8-4.0 GPA) during their first semester at WKU were honored at this event.

Jessica Tinnell – Broadcasting (Louisville, KY) and Sara Smith – Communication Studies (Louisville, KY) were announced today as recipients of the Next Generation Nonprofit Leaders Program (NextGen) Award.

The WKU Recreation Administration is celebrating 40 years of educating students. Established in 1967 by the late Dr. Fred Kirchner, the program included a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Public Service (MPS) Degree. A Master of Science Degree replaced the MPS Degree in 1974. The program received its initial national accreditation in 1980 and continues as an accredited program today.

WKU students enrolled in a fall semester course, Rec 220 - Introduction to Nonprofit Human Service Organizations, received a glimpse of the inner-workings of nonprofit organizations in South Central Kentucky. The course content focused on nonprofit history, ethics, personnel and volunteer management, human development, programming, risk management, customer service, and careers; all essential elements to understanding nonprofit organizations.

Becky Wharton, a Junior Economics major from Nashville, TN was honored for her work in developing the gerontology student group Aging in Action. Center for Gerontology Director, Dr. Dana Burr Bradley cited Ms. Wharton’s “energy, enthusiasm and genuine desire to improve the quality of life for the area’s seniors” in her nomination letter.

Dr. Randy Deere received the Walter H. Mustaine Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Kentucky Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. The award is presented to individuals who have contributed to KAHPERD for many years and have been recognized for earlier accomplishments.

The Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management is a program which prepares students for successful careers within the sport industry. Students will complete the WKU required general education courses with some required as pre-requisites for application into the degree program. Additionally, students will take 51 hours of major courses and then use the remaining 33 hours to either 1) take other electives of interest to the student or 2) select a minor that best prepares them for entry level positions related to their interest within the sport industry. Complementary minors include but are not limited to; athletic coaching, broadcasting, business administration, and facility and event management.

The Center for Gerontology hosted a world premiere screening of “Say Goodbye to Granddad’s Retirement” for the campus and community on October 22 in the Downing University Center Theater. Written and directed by Tony Walker, a 1983 WKU graduate, the film features WKU Gerontology students and professors. Dr. Dana Burr Bradley (Director, Center for Gerontology) and Dr. Brian Strow from WKU’s Department of Economics served as consultants in the film.

HCA Program faculty attend AUPHA meeting in Orlando, FL. r. Dave Wyant and Dr. Chuck Wainright represented WKU in the Certification/Accreditation Review of the Healthcare Administration Undergraduate Program. They were told that WKU had an outstanding Program and the review went extremely well. Many thanks go out to all the HCA faculty and the graduate assistants - Scharee Cain, Shanea Wilson, Swapna Jamode, and Amanda Barker for all the great help on the preparation of the self-study documents. All the hard work paid off and the HCA Program should get a letter from the AUPHA reviewers in about a month or two on the result. It will still need to go before the AUPHA Review Board in September, but the HCA faculty feel very positive that they will receive the full five year recertification of the HCA undergraduate program.

Speaker Richards, who has a bookstore in Bowling green congratulated Jagdish for his body of work at WKU. He said “Authors take the society one step forward and I hope, Jagdish, you will keep up the good work and your commitment towards Kentucky.”

Dr. Dana Burr Bradley co-authored a study examining women and depression appearing in the June issue of Social Forces. Although the sex difference in depression is well documented in westernized, developed countries, there is little quantitative cross-cultural research on the topic.
