Williams Scholars
The Williams Clinical Community Service Scholarship program was created to help disadvantaged children get dental care and to encourage graduates to practice in rural and underserved communities. This scholarship is awarded to four students each year in the University of Louisville School of Dentistry.The Fairview Community Health Center in Bowling Green, KY was added in September 2006 as a clinical site for the Williams’ Scholars. This is a collaborative effort involving three organizations. The South Central AHEC coordinates this project. The Fairview Community Health Center provides a preceptor for the students and a dental office for treatment and a diverse underserved patient population. And the University of Louisville School of Dentistry provides the dental students who perform the dental treatments.
Williams’ Scholars in the UofL School of Dentistry come to Bowling Green one Friday each month and provide dental treatments under the supervision of Dr. Mike Hubbard, Dentist at Fairview Community Health Center.
The South Central AHEC provides travel reimbursement for the Williams’ Scholars. Travel reimbursement is based on the state mileage chart and students are reimbursed for 240 miles roundtrip at .35 per mile for a total of $84. Students are encouraged to car pool if at all possible. Students will be asked to sign a non-employee travel reimbursement release form at the beginning of this experience. This release form will allow the AHEC staff to submit a travel voucher each month for students without their signature.
